  1. The combination of Christopher Plummer's narrative & Richard Bain's photography draws you in, taking you along the quiet side roads, & around the beautiful city of Stratford. A fitting tribute to the city!

1 comments about A Traveller's History of Canada (Traveller's History).
  1. I'm studying Canadian Literature and this book is great because it provided me with the interesting facts of Canada and its short but lively history. Anyone thinking about working and living there or just going there for a holiday can read this book and discover the amazing history behind Canada's diverse and mulitcultural population. It has many index resources for anyone wishing to know the 'hard facts'.
The book is apart of a series of traveller's guides which seem to give readers interesting facts without boring them!! I was initially tempted to buy this book because it was written from a traveller's perspective. Having purchased it from Amazon I am delighted with its light and story-like style which makes it very enjoyable to read.

3 comments about Day by Day to Alaska; Queen Charlotte Islands and Around Vancouver Island.
  1. I found Day By Day to be compelling reading as I share the same love and awe of nature as Mr. Petersen and his family. We enjoyed a cruise from Vancouver to Sitka, Juneau and Glacier Bay some years ago. The observations of these areas in the book were particularly interesting to me. To experience Glacier Bay cruising alone in a small boat was truly an awesome feat. The book describes the wild life viewed in detail indicating how to keep oneself safe while viewing bears, etc.

Tips on fishing these beautiful waters also were of interest. The catching of about every game fish, crabs, and digging clams was included in the book. This book is also a guide to great places to eat along the way, on land sights not to be missed, hot springs for bathing and best places to anchor.

To anyone owning a boat, the mechanical problems described and how they were corrected would be very helpful. Also, a novice would find invaluable the detailed descriptions of tides, times to avoid certain waters and highlights of the many inlets and coves he explored and which are named in the book.

There are numerous instances of protection and guidance as the result of his leaning on the almighty and trusting in God's care.

To read this book is a must for anyone contemplating cruising these waters and it would be a valuable companion on one's trip.

  2. I am disappointed that the editorial review did not indicate that this book is actually an evangelical platform for a born-again Christian. Mr. Petersen averages some discourse on his God and his faith about every 5 pages. There are 38 "God" citations in the index.
Had I known that the voyage was to serve as his "Sermon on the Inside Passage", I would not have purchased the book.

  3. This book is great for those who want to cruise to Alaska in a small boat or just enjoy cruising around islands in the Inside Passage. It is full of tips, lists, and local insight from someone that has made the trip several times. I was glad to know small boats can make the trip to Alaska if you are careful. Besides this book I suggest anyone planning to make a trip like this take the piloting classes offered by the United States Power Squadron or Coast Guard Auxiliary to learn more about using charts, and GPS.

2 comments about Calgary Stampede: An Altitude Superguide (Altitude Superguides).
  1. This book is just the greatest! If you care for animals you need this book! It's talking about how HUMANS treat animals (and ultimately each other). And humans CAN think, reason, and have compassion. Let me quote Ghandi, "We err in copying the lower animal world - if we are superior to it." To paraphrase Charles Darwin, our differences are that of degree rather than kind. To this end, we must as a society grapple with unconscionably exploitative features of our relationship with the animal kingdom.

Within the contexts of feminism, racism, speciesism, classism, and vegetarianism, the author lucidly demonstrates how our culture and language (re)define and (re)inforce a great feeling of satisfaction at the sport of bull riding and some of the better known riders. It also includes some really great pictures!

Having been a bull rider for 5 years I found the book so good that everything he was writing about, I could see it clearly in my mind. I know the riders so well that it was amazing how easily he put the characters and their characteristics into words that were so descriptive and easy for any reader to get a clear picture of them in their own mind.

Best nonfiction book about cowboys and showgirls and all-night trips down dusty highways. But buy it, and many copies of it, because you will want your friends to experience its cinematic poignancy after the movie in your head ends. I encourage English teachers to consider this in a curricula on rodeo writing. It is lasting stuff.

  2. Oh the Stampede!! I may be a Goth at heart but I was raised in the Country and can appreicate a good rodeo!... Nothing get me hollaring then watching the bull riding events!!!

This book was a great reference to Calgary and believe me when my dh and I are able to get there we will be taking this guide along!!

  1. This cookbook is great to add to your collection. It has down - home cooking that will take you out of the breakfast or brunch doldrums. It has more than breakfast, but all the recipes are mostly simple but taste great. It is enjoying to read about each bed and breakfast and the people that run them. I'm not only getting a cookbook, but also a reference book of christian hospitality to use whenever I might be travelling.

  2. This book is wonderful. It's full of many delicious recipies. I have done two prayer breakfasts and used recipies from this book and everyone raved about the food. Sticky buns and breakfast casserole recipies are fantastic along with many others I have tried. Book was on sale at my bible book store and I bought the last two they had for gifts. Now I need another one. Great book, everyone should buy one.

2 comments about My Father Came from Italy.
  1. This is not a glamorous, yuppie-audienced "Bella Tuscany." It is not a me-too account of Italy from an yet-another-New-World Italian's eyes.

It's wonderful account of a relationship between a daughter and father, and Old and New World, and a people with its extended "family." It is written totally from the heart and sings of a place and time so unnoticed it now demands attention. Yes, my roots are from the same village, and Ms. Coletta has found a way to write that speaks for and to many of us descended from those brave immigrants who left Italy with nothing, and built something in the New World. She speaks of this town and its people as if they moved her arm and pen themselves.

It is charmingly brief, a short story more than a novel, yet encapsules a soul that is indeed different. This town has its own dialect, and mannerisms different from surrounding parts of Lazio. There are enough happy and sad moments to take the readers heart and make them feel the change of emotion in one sitting, like an amusement park ride.

Read it, and pass it on. If you've never been to the place where "there's nothing to do but always something to eat," then don't knock it because you're just not able to grasp it all.

  2. I agree with the previous reviewer. This is decidedly NOT another Under the Tuscan Sun, which seems to have an "I'm used to being spoiled" attitude. I bought this book for my mother-in-law because her father did come from Italy (Sicily). I found it on her bookshelf this weekend and decided to read it myself. I was touched by the relationship between Maria and her father, both of whom are appreciative of the way the townspeople embrace them. Her father might have left the town 64 years ago, but you'd never know it by how he and his Canadian-born daughter/son-in-law/grand daughter are scooped up into the fabric of the life in Supino. I smiled and decided that one sentence kind of summed up the aura of the place when the neighbor, Joe, says to Maria on several occasions: "Maria, why do you worry so much?" The Italian focus on family, helping and respecting each other, and getting together over coffee to discuss the day's events made me want to retire and try it here, but wistful that it probably can't be duplicated.

5 comments about Rand Mcnally 2007 Deluxe Midsize Road Atlas: U.S./ Canada/ Mexico (Rand Mcnally Deluxe Road Atlas Mid Size).
  1. Bought this Atlas for my fathers birthday. He had a pitiful atlas in his car that he'd received free, but he liked the size. I found this one in the size he liked. It's more manageable with the ring binder and in addition to great city maps it has all kinds of additional information including things to see and do. He LOVES it and claimed it as his favorite gift this year.

  2. I think they should substitute "Small" for "Midsize" in the description of this item. I just returned it because it was too small. Entire states are on one letter-size page and only major roads are shown. I bought it because the Large Scale Atlas is not available in spiral bound except for the one with the Travel Guide which makes it too big and heavy. I have now ordered the Travel Guide version and intend to tear out the Travel Guide section.

  3. This book is much more than an atlasRand McNally 2007 Road Atlas: United States-Large Scale (Rand Mcnally Large Scale Road Atlas USA)

  4. I was so happy to find an Atlas with the features I've been looking for so I bought two of them, one for each vehicle.

The book size is nice, it fits perfectly underneath my seats. No more Atlas with ruined covers from being stuck between the seat and the console!

Speaking of the cover, this version has a cover made from heavier stock thus can take a bit of a beating.

The spiral-bound books are a necessity in my opinion. I don't know why there are still Road Atlas's being released that aren't spiral-bound! It's so nice to have the book opened flat without having to crease pages.

The only Con I found with this book is really the most important function of a book - the content. I expected that many of the smaller roads would be unable to fit in the smaller size however several recent trips have left me extremely frustrated when even state highways and large secondary routes were missing. There are also many towns missing, some of them larger towns with reasonably sized junctions.

I love the features (size, spiral-bound, cover) but without the content these features are pointless. I have two brand new copies if anyone needs an Atlas showing nothing but Interstates!

Release this book with better content in the next publish and it gets 5 stars. IMO, until then, put your money elsewhere.

  5. My husband and I did a cross country road trip from Seattle, WA to Atlanta, GA this past summer. This atlas was our bible on the entire trip. It served us true except in Las Vegas and Atlanta. Some of those directions were incorrect. However, the other 5587 miles, it served us well. :-)
