  1. A fascinating juxtaposition of photography, but it appears that Alan Hustak forgot to walk and to take time in a large area of the city: the book concentrates a lot on the Western area of the Montréal where the English culture is more at ease, but goes with timidity on the Eastern side of the St-Laurent street. For instance, the book mentions and shows the two English based university, and Hustak rewards their multicultural aspect, but both francophone universities, UQAM and Université de Montréal, are entirely forgotten.

Although the writer is said to be living in Montréal since 1967, it looks like he had some difficulties meeting with the French culture. The author even tends to diminish the importance and the huge contribution of this culture in the city.

On another aspect, a few camera angles of the contemporary photos are sometime disappointing in relation to the original.

  1. The one negative thing about the book was that only half of the trails listed in the book have maps with them. However, their are several positive things about the book: 1. It is printed on very thick and durable paper (which should stand up will if used while on the hikes). 2. The 50 hikes with maps do have excellent pictures associated with them. 3. All of the hikes list the best time of the day to catch the best lighting for pictures, and are classified according to degree of difficulty.

    4. The following parks are covered: Banff, Jasper, Kootenay, Yoho, and Waterton. 5.

  2. This book was really helpful in giving advice on great walks in the Rockies, from Banff to Jasper. If you are new to hiking in the National Parks, then this will introduce many of the best hikes with information on points of interest and many excellent photos.

  3. Because we forgot to bring the books we already had at home, we had to buy new ones once we arrived in the Canadian Rockies this summer. This one did exactly what we wanted it to: it gave us an idea of which hikes to do (with so much choice and so little time), and they all lived up to what the description promised in the book. We did however sometimes wonder how the author came to rate the hikes easy, moderate or difficult, as we found some that were meant to be easy more difficult and ones that were rated moderate/hard quite easy. Nevertheless: a very good book to give you an appetite for hiking in the Rockies and very helpful when you don't have much time.

  4. This is the perfect hiking/walking guide for travelers who aren't in the best physical condition. We, along with my parents who are in their 70's, spent an intense 10 days in the parks covered by this book. We took nearly all the hikes that the author noted as his favorites, plus a few more, and had no other hiking guides other than what was available on the Parks Canada web page. We found the book fairly accurate as to photography notes, difficulties, and geographics. For those wanting to take only the shorter or easier hikes, this is a great value of a book.

  5. These are excellent walks for those on a time budget but who want to see more than the hoard from the latest coach tour. The scenery is so vast that walking further gains little benefit anyway, but it gets you out of the car park and to some breathtaking scenery and peace and quiet. In most cases with very little effort.

If you like photography and if you don't, it tells you the best time of day to see the sights - Use it to plan your holiday - you don't need anything else.

Easy to read, easy on the eye and not too big; the best guide to any area I've visited.

  1. Orme presents a very readable account of the many changes taking place in Mexico as they relate to Nafta and the environment leading up to it. The book mainly discusses how Mexico and the US are integrating and largely ignores Canada, which he feels was taken care of in the FTA.

Overall, a very good account and introduction.

  2. This book is about Mexico - with litte coverage of how NAFTA affects Canada. It presents Mexico and its circumstances in a realistic manner. It is well written and easy to read. We recommend it to our clients interested in learning more about the Mexican people and the national economy. John R. Jagoe, Director, Export Institute.

  3. Overall, I think this book is a very good analysis of NAFTA. It highlights the economic history of Mexico and the role of Salinas in getting NAFTA off the ground. Orme presents a wealth of material that has definitely increased my knowledge of the agreement. Orme does an excellent job in elucidating the good facets of NAFTA; however, to get a better viewpoint of what NAFTA has done at the local level, I would encourage someone to read any recent ethnography of rural peoples in Mexico. Particularly those farmers who are eking out a living in the southern parts of Mexico, so they can buy corn grown in Saskatchewan and Alberta. Orme barely mentions the Zapatista uprising, though this is due in part to the publication date of the book. Also, I think much of the optimism surrounding the agreement in the book has been largely muted by the events of 9/11. Issues surrounding tighter border security has, in large part, replaced those surrounding free trade.

  1. Compared to the previous version, the new version is disappointingly skinny. Still, if you eat in Vancouver, Victoria, or Whistler, its a must buy.
