2 comments about Stikine River: A Guide to Paddling the Great River.
- If you are planing to go to the Nahanni country for any reason you need to read this book. If you are a fan of Patterson this book is fun to read as a modern guide to the river so you can see the photos of the country Patterson did not include in "The Dangerous River". The book is a a typical guide book and may be a little dry just to read for fun, but once again if you plan to go, get it. The author didn't write the book by looking at a map and reading a few stories, has been there and done it.
- I used this guidebook to paddle the Stikine with a friend in August 2004. The river maps are great but not quite good enough to serve in place of topo maps -- we had both. We paddled both the Spatsizi to the upper Stikine and the lower Stikine to Wrengall. My biggest complaint is that many of her minor hiking trails didn't exist. This is unspoiled nature and if there is no trail, it will take you HOURS to trek a mile. Other than that, the book was quite informative and had good descriptions of the few rapids encountered. The Stikine River itself is remote and gorgeous. It's an adventure I won't forget!

4 comments about Hidden British Columbia: Including Vancouver, Victoria, and Whistler (Hidden Travel).
- We just returned from a trip to BC where we used this book in conjunction with others. Some of the information is useful, but time and time again we were disappointed, especially in the area of lodging. Several B&Bs and Lodges that were given very positive reviews were either very ordinary, motelish or were just plain dreadful. There is a good reason why these are hidden, and should remain so.
- This book was wonderful -- we did a trip along the Yellowhead using it to direct us to lodging and the "hidden" best places -- and the only time we went wrong on our trip was when we didn't consult the book. We're planning another trip this year, because we didn't get to all the places the book directed us to.
BTW -- Louise's Kitchen in Smithers has what may arguably be the best food in Western Canada!
- Take a vacation and blend in some active sports or activities and you have an 'adventure getaway' of the type Ulysses Press specializes in - and one out of the ordinary, as its 'Hidden' series covers. Websites, walking tours, scenic drives, and both weekend and extended getaways are covered in Hidden British Columbia, which specializes in byways and lesser-known attractions and which deserves ongoing recommendation as a top travel choice for the region. From Fan Tan Alley, Canada's narrowest street, to tiny cafes, Hidden British Columbia provides a quality travel experience to any heading to the region, and makes for a perfect tote as well as a at-home planner.
- Not a bad book that a few more maps and pictures would help complete. Great reviews of places and spots of interest. Recommend this book as a supplement to other travel books on these areas. More info on off road on the path, camping spots and hiking.

- The price tag may limit this reference to the most dedicated reference library; but this new 2001 edition updates a reference which has not seen a new edition in seven years: there are many changes to contact information and details on facilities, activities, and special features have also changed. This edition of Parks Directory Of The United States also enjoys web site and e-mail addresses where possible, and adds four indexes by type of park, special features, geography and all park listings. An excellent reference.

3 comments about Fodor's Nova Scotia & Atlantic Canada, 9th Edition: With New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland & Labrador (Fodor's Gold Guides).
- The details of what is seen in the various areas are very helpful. Fodors takes you town by town in an orderly fashion with helpful information in planning your trip.
I found that after reading this book, my vacation plans were changed to accomodate more sightseeing. It was very beneficial.
- I am organising a trip in the Maritimes and this guide was the best. Very helpfull, very easy to read and you can tell the writers are from the area, they know the places.
- Anything you need to know is in this book!! Easy to use and wonderful explanations of all areas - dining, lodging and things to see! Fodor's does it all for you!

- This book has restaurants that are not listed in Fodor's or other guides to the area. It picks out the best of the best. There's even a bonus of activities to do in the area. Great book to have when visiting the area and you are interested in fine dining.

1 comments about Moon Handbooks Atlantic Canada : New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador (3rd Ed).
- My wife and I travel to Atlantic Canada every summer. We have used a variety of guidebooks including this one, which is definitely our favorite. The authors have obviously spent a lot of time in the region, and as a result they have come up with a good range of places to see, things to do, and where to stay and eat.
The reccommendations of where to stay are particularly helpful. We find the provincial tourist guides good, but their accommodation listings won't really tell you which are good or bad. This book does, and we find the reviews both accurate and very helpful. Seafood is the favorite food around Atlantic Canada, and the authors have obviously enjoyed researching this section of the book, with choices we rarely find fault with. Also importantly, the book is very well organized and easy to find your way around. There are no color photos, which is a shame, but otherwise, this book is a worthwhile investment if you're traveling to this part of Canada.

2 comments about Paddle Routes of the Inland Northwest: 50 Flatwater and Whitewater Trips for Canoe & Kayak.
- This was a refreshing change from the majority of canoe guide books. No class V in this one, just fun floats for everyone, and all close to Spokane. Kudos to the Authors.
- I have used this guide since published and it is an accurate overview of the many paddling opportunities in the Inland Northwest - Eastern Washington, North Idaho, Western Montana and even Canada. I had already tried many of the lakes and rivers but more were identified including some that I had never even considered in my 25 years in Spokane. Most of the paddles are appropriate for families. Put-ins and take-outs are well described. Great value that will save you time and money - even for the experienced paddler.
