4 comments about Lonely Planet Montreal.
- I used this guidebook while visiting Montreal in summer 2001 and had no problems at all. As to be expected from Lonely Planet, the color maps at the back are great and the three walking tours really give you a feel for the city. The restaurant list was excellent, especially an extended section on Montreal's famous bagels. There was a large chapter on excursions from Montreal, which included Ottawa, Quebec City and the Laurentian mountains among other places. All the standard Lonely Planet bits on history, culture, arts and religion were very informing; best was the little section on Canadian French where I learned to say "y'est quelle heure" instead of "quelle heure est-il."
The only complaint I could have was the lack of a map of the underground shopping city, which we found confusing to navigate, even with the map provided by the tourist authority. Otherwise it's as good a guidebook to Montreal as you're likely to find anywhere.
- i picked this book out of the ones at the bookstore b/c i liked the look of it: good number of pictures, good maps (inc. a map of the metro which most other books didn't seem to have), good info. -however-, a huge drawback to this book is its poor organization. if you're looking at one of the street maps in the book, the landmarks, etc. aren't marked by page number, so you have to look up the landmark in the index (which they have separated into food, accomodations, sites instead of all together, which proved to be very annoying), and then flip back to the page in the book. also, the book is organized again according to categories (food, sites, shopping, etc.) instead of by area, so if you're trying to build a list of things to do in one part of the city you have to keep flipping back and forth from the maps to the indices to the book, which is a huge effort that could've been fixed w/ better planning. this is really too bad, b/c o/w it has a lot of good info. next time i'm def. getting a book by a diff. company.
- This book is very poorly organized, the "French dictionary" contained no useful phrases, and the maps were terrible!! I would definitely choose something more comprehensive & buy a separate city map.
- I spent a month in Montreal to study French and used this book to explore the city. It lead me to some cool places that I would not have found otherwise and gave me good insight into the neighborhoods. By going to the recommended bagel shops, I discovered Mile End, my favorite place in the city. I also found the recommended breweries to be worthwhile. Overall this was worth the money.

- The combination of Christopher Plummer's narrative & Richard Bain's photography draws you in, taking you along the quiet side roads, & around the beautiful city of Stratford. A fitting tribute to the city!

- Now in an newly expanded and thoroughly updated fourth edition, the 448-page Vegetarian Journal's Guide To Natural Foods Restaurants In The U.S. And Canada includes inns, vacation spots, and travel companies of interest to travelers wanting to frequent vegetarian eateries. Each restaurant listing includes its address, telephone number, a one-paragraph description, a list of payments accepted, what meals are served, whether service is limited or full, and whether there are vegan options. 3 comments about The Wild Coast 1: A Kayaking, Hiking and Recreational Guide for North and West Vancouver Island (The Wild Coast).
- this book is well written and researched and really made me want to change my up coming plan for day trips on the west coastof VI by kayak and instead spend a week doing so..camping along the way -
oh well next trip -
very handy book for planning such an excursion
- While I haven't yet used this book in the field, I have found it to be really good for planning my upcoming trip. It has lots of the right kind of information to help better anticipate what to expect and how to be prepared. The organization is great as are the illustrations/graphics, and I can say this having written a guidebook of my own (Paddling Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks). I look forward to the east coast edition coming out this summer.
- This is probably the best organized and informative kayaking/travel book I own. The large area maps are coupled with more detailed local maps to provide enough context and continuity. I am travelling to the Clayoqot area for several days of solo paddling, and this book provided ample helpful information.
A very useful book, and I'll consider the others in the series, now.
One minor quibble is that the book is color coded (which is good), but the matching "breakout" trip descriptions are printed in colors to match the section. Yellow-on-white is nearly impossible to read.

2 comments about The Rough Guide to Toronto 4 (Rough Guide Travel Guides).
- This book is ideal for a short trip to Toronto or for those who don't care to carry large, bulky books with them on vacation. Most of the information is short, to the point, with a minimum of color commentary. There is a section devoted to the history of the city and references to other books for those who want more information. The book is small enough to fit in a backpack or even a coat pocket so it can be carried with you. Probably not ideal for an extended stay, but overall helpful.
- I love using Rough Guides and this was no exception. However I would've liked more info on cheaper restaurants, but I guess in a city like Toronto you can just walk a few steps and find a gem among the rocks.
The information on places of interest was also quite good.

1 comments about A Traveller's History of Canada (Traveller's History).
- I'm studying Canadian Literature and this book is great because it provided me with the interesting facts of Canada and its short but lively history. Anyone thinking about working and living there or just going there for a holiday can read this book and discover the amazing history behind Canada's diverse and mulitcultural population. It has many index resources for anyone wishing to know the 'hard facts'.
The book is apart of a series of traveller's guides which seem to give readers interesting facts without boring them!! I was initially tempted to buy this book because it was written from a traveller's perspective. Having purchased it from Amazon I am delighted with its light and story-like style which makes it very enjoyable to read.

2 comments about Calgary Stampede: An Altitude Superguide (Altitude Superguides).
- This book is just the greatest! If you care for animals you need this book! It's talking about how HUMANS treat animals (and ultimately each other). And humans CAN think, reason, and have compassion. Let me quote Ghandi, "We err in copying the lower animal world - if we are superior to it." To paraphrase Charles Darwin, our differences are that of degree rather than kind. To this end, we must as a society grapple with unconscionably exploitative features of our relationship with the animal kingdom.
Within the contexts of feminism, racism, speciesism, classism, and vegetarianism, the author lucidly demonstrates how our culture and language (re)define and (re)inforce a great feeling of satisfaction at the sport of bull riding and some of the better known riders. It also includes some really great pictures! Having been a bull rider for 5 years I found the book so good that everything he was writing about, I could see it clearly in my mind. I know the riders so well that it was amazing how easily he put the characters and their characteristics into words that were so descriptive and easy for any reader to get a clear picture of them in their own mind. Best nonfiction book about cowboys and showgirls and all-night trips down dusty highways. But buy it, and many copies of it, because you will want your friends to experience its cinematic poignancy after the movie in your head ends. I encourage English teachers to consider this in a curricula on rodeo writing. It is lasting stuff.
- Oh the Stampede!! I may be a Goth at heart but I was raised in the Country and can appreicate a good rodeo!... Nothing get me hollaring then watching the bull riding events!!!
This book was a great reference to Calgary and believe me when my dh and I are able to get there we will be taking this guide along!!

3 comments about Great Lakes Lighthouses Encyclopedia.
- This is really a great lighthouse book. It has beautiful pictures and a lot of information about the history of over 600 lighthouses of the Great Lakes. It even has information on lost lighthouses such the Kalamazoo River Light near Saugatuck, Michigan. I know of no other book which has more comprehensive coverage of all of the Great Lakes lights and has it all in one volume. And my copy was a real bargain purchased a lower price here than any of the bookstores in my area.
- This book provides more information about the lighthouses of the Great Lakes, past & present, than any I have read before. It is an outstanding resource.
- the best lighthouse book we have seen, and we have several excellent books, this is concise, easy to read and laid out so you can make a lighthouse color tour.

2 comments about The Christian Bed and Breakfast Cookbook.
- This cookbook is great to add to your collection. It has down - home cooking that will take you out of the breakfast or brunch doldrums. It has more than breakfast, but all the recipes are mostly simple but taste great. It is enjoying to read about each bed and breakfast and the people that run them. I'm not only getting a cookbook, but also a reference book of christian hospitality to use whenever I might be travelling.
- This book is wonderful. It's full of many delicious recipies. I have done two prayer breakfasts and used recipies from this book and everyone raved about the food. Sticky buns and breakfast casserole recipies are fantastic along with many others I have tried. Book was on sale at my bible book store and I bought the last two they had for gifts. Now I need another one. Great book, everyone should buy one.
