5 comments about Against the Wind: A Maine to Alaska Bicycling Adventure.
- As a work of literature, this book doesn't quite make it. Sentence structure is poor, and it is riddled with grammatical problems and sloppy typos. However, this could be a very useful book for a cyclist planning a long-distance trip. Some of the author's observations are very interesting (although his way of describing them is often annoying) and he details some of the hardships and adventures involved in such a journey. His description of a temporary riding mate and their undesired reunion later was amusing.
Still, this book could have used a good proofreader, as the author (though he claims to be a journalist) has very little understanding of apostrophe and comma use, and his attempts to be amusing with wordplay end up looking clumsy. His writing style is often confusing and I found myself rereading passages several times to figure out what he was talking about. If you love biking and don't care about grammar and sentence structure, this is a good book for you.

- I tend to agree with the reviewer from Chicago - the author could have used a (better) proofreader. This is one of those books where the reader almost begins to look for the next mistake. At one point the last line on one page is repeated in its entirety as the first line of the next page. And, as was noted in the other review, the proper use of apostrophes is very inconsistent.
The adventures the author experienced cannot be discounted, however. There are many interesting stories that, if you're a cyclist, cause you to pause and try to imagine yourself in those situations. One that especially struck me - other than his "bear/human interaction" - was having a mechanical failure with the closest bike shop being 300 miles distant. Also, the number of "it's a small world" incidents Basch experienced on the trip makes for interesting reading. If you are a cyclist who enjoys touring, and can overlook the typos and such, you will probably find this book a quick, entertaining read.
- This book is amazing. It described a wonderful adventure of a man fulfilling his dream despite many risks. The author faced many obstacles including weather, aggressive drivers, bears and yet perservered to the end while managing to have fun, learn many things, and meet a wide variety of people. He wrote about it from a laptop computer which he carried with him. Anyone who noticed any mistakes in grammar doesn't deserve to read this book. I recommend that you get it as soon as you can and pass to anyone who loves to read, travel or ride a bicycle.
- This book feels like an accumulation of unedited e-mail. If punctuation and grammar are important to you, this book might get on your nerves.

2 comments about Canadian Rockies: An Altitude Superguide (Altitude Superguides).
- I travel quite a bit in my job as a computer trainer. I had the rare priviledge of working on a project in Edmonton, Alberta on several trips.
I've toured the Jasper to Banff (and reverse) Icefields Parkway five times, and Mt. Robson twice. It was on my second weekend trip during a rest stop at The Crossing that I spied a different kind of book. The stunning photography and well-organized sections sold me on the spot. This guide made my ride that day on the Icefields Parkway an experience I'll never forget. It has everything: maps, history, biographies, and hotel guides, you name it! I still get it out occasionally to relive the most beautiful trips I've been on. There's even a section on best times and techniques to photograph certain places. I have taken it with me every trip to help me identify and record where my numerous photos were taken. I always recommend this book as an essential part of any excursion into the area. Read it before you go, that way you won't miss anything!
- super book with an interesting mix of history, recommendations, and photographs. i was very glad i read through this book before i visited the area.

1 comments about Where Locals Hike in the Canadian Rockies: The Premier Trails near Canmore & Calgary.
- "Premier Trails in Kananaskis Country" describes the authors' picks of interesting trails in the provincial parks south and east of Banff National Park, near Calgary, Canada. Kananaskis Country gets much less publicity, at least outside Calgary, than the justly famous and much older Banff National Park. For those who have already "done" Banff and Lake Louise, this guide opens up a new, and in its own way, hugely worthwhile area for exploration by hikers.
The guide offers descriptions of 41 separate hikes (some of which are interlinked) in Kannaskis Country. The Copelands have rated the hikes by degreee of difficulty from easy to challenging. The assignment of rating seems based in part on how difficult the terrain is to traverse, as well as the distance involved and the relative altitude gain. The Copelands are admittedly experienced and very fit hikers. This middle-aged author and his wife, moderately fit and used to the 3,000 to 4,000 foot peaks of the Chugach Range in Alaska, tried three "easy" hikes and found them all very doable as half day hikes under at least average weather conditions and without technical assistance.
The guide includes information on what is unique or special about the terrain associated with each hike, whether an especially good view of the Continental Divide or the chance to cross a beautiful Alpine meadow. The level of detail includes, in some cases, what time of day may provide the best viewing (many valleys and high cirques in Kannaskis Country may be in shadow in the morning or the afternoon, depending on their orientation). The selection of photos provide some sense of scale for the terrain. The sketch maps included in each chapter don't provide much detail for routefinding, especially in areas without well-established trails; we heartily endorse the use of the Gem Trek maps recommended by the authors as a necessary supplement.
The guide includes much useful commentary on wildlife, weather, and other potential hazards in the Canadian Rockies, as well as some sound recommendations on equipment. The latter will be especially useful for hikers who may not have seen many days with 30 degree temperature ranges and weather that runs the full gamut of sun, shower, and snow in a single half-day hike.
This guide is highly recommended for hikers visiting the Canadian Rockies west of Calgary and looking for "where the locals go."

3 comments about Rand McNally 2001 Road Atlas: United States, Canada, Mexico (Rand Mcnally Road Atlas: United States, Canada, Mexico).
- Rand McNally has compiled, once again, the yardstick that any road atlas will be measured against. As an avid traveller, I can personally testify to the fantastic detail of this particular atlas in terms of detail and readability. The number of cities that have a separate page dedicated to them is staggering and much appreciated.
- I have traveled using the Road Atlas almost every where in the US and the Atlas has turned out to be a perfect guide. It shows all the major Interstates, US Highways and a lot more. The discount coupons at the back also help a lot.
In comparisn with the National Geographic Road Atlas, this Atlas comes on top because of the clarity of maps and the quality of paper. A definite 5 Star Purchase.
