  1. "...intended for the adventure-minded travelers with special affection for the outdoors and nature. Each Adventure Guide packs in outdoor-oriented activities set in different regions. There's something for nearly everyone." Midwest Book Review

  2. Awful. One of the most poorly organized travel guides I've ever been duped into buying. Restaurants and hotels are jumbled together for entire regions so as to be rendered useless (not that the reviews were useful anyway); I'd spend twenty minutes just trying to figure out where in the book Halifax was! There are, unbelievably, no city or town introductions whatsoever (you have no way of deciding where to go, which is the whole point of having a travel guide). Although there is some worthwhile information about campsites and kayaking, in general, the writing is uniformly poor, the judgments undiscriminating, and the information out of date. I threw it away to save car space. Don't make the same mistake as me.

  3. Although the 1st edition of this book was terrific, the second one is even better. We've used this guidebook to plan several trips to Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and other Atlantic Canada destinations, and the authors' write-ups have steered us in the right direction each time. The book is well organized, with a comprehensive index, and coverage is detailed and well-written, with a touch of humor. We highly recommend it!

  4. A couple of happy wanderers, Tim and Barbara Rogers, have a stack of travel books to their credit as high as a totem pole. As co-authors and on their own, they have covered such widespread locales as their New England homestead, the Galapagos Islands, African safari parks, Latin America and the rivers and seas of Europe.

Here, the peripatetic pair is back on the familiar turf of the first days of their marriage, when they explored the provinces on their honeymoon. "We've traveled much of the world together," writes the globetrotting duo in the book's introduction, "but no place on earth (as Canada's Atlantic Provinces) has constantly offered...so many adventures to broaden our repertoire of outdoor activities."

Meandering through New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland, kayaking around an iceberg, running exhilarating rapids, or simply watching a family of moose grazing along a lazy river, the authors joyfully record the great natural beauty of this unspoiled land.

Jam-packed with useful information, the hefty volume (620 pages) has an easy-to-follow format with plenty of practical travel tips. Included are recommendations on where to stay and eat, plus detailed background on what to do and see, where and when. Whether you're looking for a cultural and eco-travel experience, wildlife-watching, fishing and camping sites, or merely a restful respite from a humdrum workaday world, the Rogers can guide you to a rewarding outdoors getaway.

  5. This travel guide often misses important advice, and was misleading regarding some places, while it missed others. Example: p586 described Trout River Pond as one of the most scenic places on the continent for stillwater kayaking. It wasn't. You had to go four miles for it to start getting good. While there was much better kayaking in the same park. In other places it missed the largest hotels and failed to warn that summer almost requires reservations. So does the unreliable ferry. Newfoundland was among the best places I ever explored but the free book from the provinces tourist bureau was much more valuable.

  1. I love reading and rereading books about epic canoe or kayak trips. Most of these books let you into the wilderness experience. Some let you into the author's head, to understand the wonder, peace, loneliness and fear of long solo trips. Some introduce you to people met along the way, sometimes through rose coloured glasses, sometimes with no holds barred.

Unfortunately the focus of this book seems to be the authors themselves and how they impressed the people they met.

I would recommend the following books:

Into the Great Solitude : An Arctic Journey Coke Stop in Emo : Adventures of a Long-Distance Paddler

Arctic Adventures : Exploring Canada's North by Canoe and Dog Team

Kabloona in the Yellow Kayak : One Woman's Journey Through the North West Passage

Going Inside : A Couple's Journey of Renewal into the North

Arctic Crossing : A Journey Through the Northwest Passage and Inuit Culture.

  2. I found the McGuffins' story both engrossing and disturbing. Joannie just tells the truth: Many of the worst challenges of their pretty incredible, well planned, rugged and successful trip resulted from industrial development such as sewage and tanker propwash on the St. Lawrence R., and pollution, flooding and ecosystem destruction caused by hydroelectric dams in the more remote parts of the old NWC/HBC route through Cumberland House. But the friendliness and helpfulness of the people they ran into in remote places is still there and so is their infectious wonder at unspoiled wildness in the many places where they found it. The challenge for all of us seeking a nostalgic reconnection to unspoiled nature and history is to find and enjoy it under a mostly distressing overlay of increasing environmental abuses. Joannie succeeded despite the odds. The McGuffins' story was an eye-opener and page-turner for me.

  3. "Where Rivers Run" is a wonderful book by the Canadian outdoor couple Gary and Joanie McGuffin, who have made a name for themselves as outdoor writers and photographers since they made their 6,000 mile voyage in the early 1980's. Their trip, retracing the voyageur's route from the Atlantic Ocean to the Beaufort Sea, took them 2 long summer seasons. I have read quite a few "expedition" books and this is one of my favorites. There are excellent section maps of their route. The authors are very honest about the hardships and joys that they experienced along the whole trip. They encounter environmental pollution at many places along their route and they write accurate portraits of the countryside and people along the way. It is very apparent that they love the historic north and they write well about their experiences. The evolution of their skills as voyageurs is told in detail: from having their equipment ripped off along the St. Lawrence River and battling wind, waves and current to learning about Native subsistence fishing along Arctic Red River. A fun book by an optimistic young pair of adventurers who aren't afraid to live out their dreams.

  4. FOR A 6,000 MILE CANOE JOURNEY, MY HATS OFF TO THIS COUPLE BUT PUTTING DOWN ON PAPER IT MISSED THE MARK. A VERY FLUFFY READ AND IT NEVER CAUGHT THE FEELING OF THE ADVENTURE IT WAS. EVEN WHEN THEY ENDURED RAIN AND COLD IT FELT LIKE THE SUN WAS OUT.

  1. I like the various sample itineraries included in the books. The good thing is that the author goes into detail about the various stops and sights she has included in the itinerary. The author provides good and practical info on where to stay, how to get there and all the interesting things to do while you are there.

  2. The book includes a good selection of locations, with the potential to combine with each other, and clarity in the exposure of what the author considers the best of each area.

  1. If you're a horse racing fan, don't miss the racetrack profiles, extensive tips on where to stay and how best to enjoy, and interviews which pair with history in HORSE RACING COAST TO COAST: THE TRAVELER'S GUIDE TO THE SPORT OF KINGS. This book's loaded with everything the horse race buff needs to know; from hotels and recommended eateries to trackside statistics. Unparalleled in its scope, it's a horse racing fan's travel 'bible'.

  1. worth getting! What a great book. Baltimore Sports
bars are like the Footall that's been played in
Charm City for many decades now. From the AAFC
to the NFL to the USFL to the Arena Football
League (1989 Commandos, before they moved back
to Washington) to the CFL World Champ Stallions.
Now even the Ravens have won the Super Bowl. God
must love Baltimore Football. And this bar book
captures the best of SPORTS bars in Raven-City!
