  1. Poorly prepared, two friends, and their half-indian manservant "George", decide to travel deep in to the interior of Labrador. The hardship they endure and the hard choices they make are a testimony to the resilience of the human spirit. This book gives great insight into what life was like in eastern Canada at the turn of this century.

  2. I cannot say enough about the content and the form of this book. It beautifully informs the reader not only of the enthusiasm of two would-be wilderness pioneers, but also of the errors they did not know they had made along the way to a tragic end. I get the feeling that the author, who wrote the book (according to the introduction) as a tribute to his lost mate, never overlooks or overplays any of the events that took place in the then-unchartered terrain of eastern Laborador. The author also makes plain that the voyage ended his youthful naivete by teaching him the necessity of respecting the natural world and of remembering our loves who slowly but surely disappear from our lives.

In short, Lure Of the Laborador Wild, despite its drab title, is an engrossing work. It is quiet, clearly written and, in a matter-of-fact way, terrifying. It towers far above all other nonfiction adventure books I have read over the past ten years.

  3. I have read a lot of teen adventure books. I recently read this one while I was on a rugged boys canoe camp trip. We went on a 7 week trip with 12 men to labrador. I purchased this book because it was nonfiction and it was saying how these 3 brave, adventurous men took a trip similar to the area i'll be going to. It talked about how mothernature just (threre's really no word for it but...)Destroys these people and they fight back with courage and hope in succeeding this raw adventure. The three in progress of there adventure take care of eachother and keep eachother alive nad in this doing they become better than great friends almost brothers. I really don't want to ruin the book for you, but i suggest so strongly that you get a copy of this book, and oh yea the beginning of the book really is boring because it tells you of how they got to labrador in 1902 (they didn't have cars).

  4. I have read this book several times, and would recomend it to anyone that enjoys an adventure story. I enjoy it even more than most as Leonidas Hubbard was my grandfathers first cousin. This book has been almost required reading in our family,(Hubbard).I hope the publisher will reprint it as we have many family members looking for a copy of the book.

  5. A deeply moving misadventure. In getting lost, these three men discovered the soul of Labrador as well as the true meaning of friendship and survival. This book is a classic.

  1. I'm not so sure that amazon has the latest edition of this book. Check http://www.nunavuthandbook.com/index.html for more information. They have a 2004 edition and the information on this page says 1998. Possibly the edition here is updated but the page is not.

  1. A beautiful coastline, and in order to experience the full beauty of nature, you need a boat which can cost thousands, right? Not so, says "Exploring the BC Coast by Car", a well researched and written guidebook dedicated to seeing all the sights the land of British Columbia has to offer without all of the expenses that one would expect have to pay. Promoting routes through the wilderness of the province by car, by foot, by kayak, or by float plane, it's an ideal reference for any hiking enthusiast. "Exploring the BC Coast by Car" is highly recommended to community library travel collections.

  1. I have read this book for the 5th time since I was about 8 years old. I am 36 and it has never lost its' grip on me. Leslie's first hand account of communing with bears in British Columbia's remote, yet not remote enough, North Woods is truly unforgettable. How this book became out of print, and never a movie or documentary defies explanation. Leslie's descriptive language and compelling narrative is a tribute to nature writers everywhere. Readers who like Farley Mowat and Robert Redford would like this book. I plan on passing this on to my 2 year old son as my mother passed it on to me whaen old enough to comprehend. Long live the bear!

  3. In correction of the review written below, the book was made into a movie in 1974, starring Patrick Wayne. It's very hard to find, but is worth seeing. The story, both on the page on the screen, is wonderous.

  4. I found this book unexpectedly in Grandma's house, and, as I've decided to start reading more, I read it. It was terrific. Leslie told exactly how he felt, and he told it well enough that I felt it too. What happened to him may as well have happened to me, reading this book. His narration took me directly into the North Woods. And, once I was there, there was no lack of a story to keep me moving along. I watched the three cubs become his family; I watched them grow up; I watched them through fun and hard times. The forest was rich with detail and poignant occasions. I am staunchly against crying, but at the end I seriously thought about considering it, and that's not something that is easy to make me do. All in all, I have to say that you really need to get your hands on this book.

  1. This is an extrodinate book. Once you pick it up, you can't stop reading it. When I started to read the book, I right away became more interested in the Niagara Falls. This book kept my imagination going the entire time. I recommend this book to anybody who is facinated by mystery, heroism, and tragedies of one of the most breath taking places on earth.

  2. Very pleased with my purchase and I hope to hear more of T.W. Kriner in the near future.

  3. If you are tired of reading the same stories over and over again - about Niagara Falls, then this is the book for you. The book is packed with little known trivia in a well-written manner.

  1. We planned our honeymoon out of this book, and boy am I glad that we did. The places in here are all splurges, but it's money well spent. Jacuzzis, balconies, and all sorts of romantic touches. This book never steered us wrong. Plus it's a delight just to look at the photos, and dream of trying more spots.

  2. This item should not be sold any longer. Many of the places to stay listed in this book no longer exist. Do not purchase this book. It needs to be "put to rest".
