- Helmut Sick was one of Brazil's foremost ornithologists and his book on Brazilian birds is still the main reference. This book is a personal account of an expedition in the 40s from Aragarças (eastern Goias) to the Tapajos river and Manaus. This was then virgin territory and it is a fascinating read. Today part of the Cerrado and Amazon have been disappeared with no thanks to large-scale agriculture. Fortunately, a large part of the Amazon is still there and you can still feel an explorer there.
For those who love nature and want to get a glimpse of situation of the indians and the challenges of expeditions in those days, a great read.
- This book came out an ornithologists trip throughly largely unexplored NW brazil in the 1940's. The purpose of the mission was to establish an air base and "modernize" the interior of Brazil. Luckily for us Helmut sick went along for the trek.
Unfortunately, it's too bad someone so skilled in ornithology isn't a little more skilled with people. While his exuberance concerning birds shows plainly, he has apparently never been schooled in anthropology. He only vaguely seems aware of the damage he's doing to the natives way of life by trading tools with them and giving them more modern implements. I understand the events in this book occurred in the 1940's but still.
Great work on birds. Bad work on people.

- Travels in the interior of Brazil, George Gardner.
Gardner made his epic adventure in the middle of the 1800's entering into a young country with an ancient heritage.. The book opens with a prosaic account of his first senses of Rio. I say senses because every sense is so vividly described. So clear are the descriptions, they take you back to over a century ago and as you travel back with Gardner you marvel at the sights, sounds and flower scented air he describes, on entering the bay. After some time Gardner ventured from Rio to the northern coasts, through unchartered and often physically hostile territories. Amid eloquent descriptions of the hardships of expedition, you travel along and see the places and the peoples as they tread through the book. Towns appear, vividly described, time travel to Crato in the heat stricken northeast Ceara state, and deeper described are local idiosynchrasies, take Crato's fossil fish mines, the peoples, the dusty heat tortured, windswept to flooded and verdant landscapes.. and high plateaus with cascading springs, reminiscent of Arthur Conan Doyle's, Lost World. Perchance was this the book that inspired Conan-Doyle.. with its mention of bizarre exceptionally presereved fossils and high plateau landscapes... A truly magnificent book, believe in time travel and allow yourself to be taken back with this amazing account of one man's epic expedition..

1 comments about Brazil Industrial And Business Directory (World Business, Investment and Government Library).
- This Industrial and Business Directory is pathetic and outdated. Furthermore, it does not contain much, if anything, not freely accessible (not to mention more current) via the internet. For example, The CIA World Factbook, a free online resource provided by the U.S. Government [...] has 50% of the info in this Book from International Business Publications. I purchased this book in November 2006, and it did not have facts regarding the Brazilian Presidential Election of 2002! This makes its accuracy regarding strategic economic information and listings of Business contacts in Brazil questionable at best, and useless at worst.
If you're looking for a list of government agencies and major businesses with contact info by industry sector, and are willing to accept that the info is at least 3-5 years old, then it will save you some time online or at the library. Otherwise, you will be disappointed. Today, global business and political climates change rapidly, and for a book to be represented as "updated annually" (boldly printed on page 2) and be so far in the past, is shameful.
Personally, I would have rather sent the more than US$100 I spent on this resource to a charity.
