2 comments about Places & History: Brazil (Places and History).
- This book was donated to our high school library from a Brazilian exchange student. The large colorful pictures, maps, and diagrams are reminscent of a National Geographic publication. The text is clear and easy to read and includes an extensive index. The format and cover appeal makes it an excellent addition to our collection.
- Although this book has wonderful pictures of Brazil, it also provides inaccurate information. Historical facts were completly twisted by the authors of this book who reveal extreme ignorance. I was surprised that they had in fact courage to publish a book like this...Don't spend your money here.

1 comments about Saudades Do Brasil: A Photographic Memoir.
- Clause-Levi-Strauss is a reference for generations since the publication of his studies about kinship, in which he developed his theories about structure and after that, some of our intellectual fields have never been the same again.
An intellectual like him can be very important for a science in a country, and he has influenced most of Brazilian anthropologists since then. But this marvellous photographic and literary essay reaveals that a country can also be very important for a young sociologist that would became one of the guidelines of the contemporary thpught. The young intellectual born in Belgium arrived in Sao Paulo about 1935 with his young wife, Dina. The Universty of Sao Paulo was in process of creation and he came here to teach antropology. Here, in contact with his students that were French speakers, with Mario de Andrade - the author of Macunaima - and going through the fields of a changing city like Sao Paulo and the forests of Brazil, he became an Antropologist.
Now, he feels "saudade", this word that only exists in Portuguese. To fell saudades is to miss something or somebody, to be homesick, to feel nostalgic, but is a feeling beyond description. Reading this book, as Brazilian and Anthopologist, and looking at the photos LeviStrauss took here, I felt saudades as well. I could not write of saudades of a time when I was not even born. But of a lost city, the Indians we lost, the antrhopological hope of an understanding between men. During the thirties, Brazil and France were geographically far, but could dialogue in equal terms. Now all frontiers are fading and we can feel saudades of the promises that the modern thought has left without answer

1 comments about Rio De Janeiro.
- I lived in Rio in the 60's and have great memories of my years there. I lived on Copacabana beach and went to school in Leblon and spent most of my afternoon and weekends on Ipanema beach. This book's beautiful photography and interesting text were everything that I hoped they would be in that they capture the very best of Rio, the places as well as the events that make Rio de Janeiro the wonderful and magical city that it was then and seems to still be today. I would recommend this book to anyone, whether or not they have ever been there. If they have not, maybe they will be inspired to take a vacation there someday.

1 comments about The Pantanal: Brazil's Forgotten Wilderness.
- This is a well-written and highly personal account of a naturalist-photographer's adventures and misadventures in one of the least known regions of the Brazilian interior, an area teeming with natural beauty that is rapidly being destroyed. The book begins as a light-hearted journey undertaken by an equipment-laden photographer who negotiates his way into the heart of the Pantanal amid much naive bumbling and enthusiasm. It ends on a note of despair as we encounter the ultimate expression of man's cruelty both to himself and to nature, an illegal wild-life market in a Rio suburb where rare birds are caged and mutilated. Along the way we learn much about the history and geography of the Pantanal and of the political corruption that is endemic to Brazil, which has increasingly come under international scrutiny for practices of which no nation is wholly innocent. There are powerful portraits of leading conservationists, such as the brilliant cinematographer, Arne Sucksdorf, and the famed ornithologist, Helmut Sick. The key to Banks's effective presentation of his ecological message is his personal involvement throughout the narrative: the problems of poaching lead to a day with an incredibly inept and thuggish police patrol; the problems of gold-mining and mercury poisoning lead to a day in the pits. We are treated, moreover, to the full range of Brazilian society, from cowboys and peasants to high-placed officials; comrades and friends jostle for space alongside more dubious types. All in all, this is a fine achievement that should be read by anyone with an interest in environment affairs, Brazilian folkways, or, simply, human adventure candidly told. It is considered the leading introduction to the Pantanal and is the basis for a prize-winning film.
