  1. Excellent! Absolutely indispensable for the Amazon traveler - not only is it packed with useful info, but Bloom clearly understands the local cultures in a way that few travel writers do. Highly recommended-

  2. Not many books are available about Amazonia, and indeed this is a very useful one when trying to find information on excursions, guides, food, health... but some remarks on the cities and their inhabitants are quite superficial. The way people live in cities such as Manaus or Belém should make us think of more than what colorful the marketplaces are, if we intend to understand a bit of what's happening in the Amazon, and in Latin America. The inclusion of detailed maps of the cities and some budget hotels could greatly improve this book.

  3. Few books have ever excited me as much as this one. My copy has a sticker that says it won Best Guidebook of the Year and this book deserves it. The author has obviously traveled herself through the Amazon and she gives a lot of "up close" tips. But what makes the book so special are also the articles written by other people--scientists and shamans who work with tribal people. The chapter by Dr. Meyer who had a shamanisticc experience with an Indian tribe and fire ants is just incredible! I wasn't even planning to go to the Amazon when I visited Brazil but somehow this book ended up in my hands and changed my life. Whether you are going to the Amazon or just want to read about it,get this book. I loved it!

  1. This guide (??) does not do a very good job of guiding one around Rio de Janeiro. Too many cute icons...colored circles...arrows pointing in all directions...squares ...triangles...all mashed together leading to total confusion and frustration. More of a headache than a help. Very colorful....slick package but does not produce.

  2. This guides does a good job on guiding you around Rio. Some of the attractions of this wonderful city, full of magnificent nature and historic buildings, were not mentioned or well described. But this guide is surely one of the best options for the foreign visitor to Rio.

  3. As a native of Rio I have to say I found it simply one of the best and easiest guides about the Wonderful City. Light and essential, it is perfect to be carried everywhere on your trip. It covers all the basics and will be able to take you to all major attractions and sights on this fabulous city. An informal, compact, colorful and useful guide for a fun loving place. Just buy it !

  1. Culture shock is sometimes taken for granted, however to be cosmopolitan, is to have experienced a culture shock and being able to fully utilize it to your own benefit. Brazil is one of these places in the world were the unwritten rules are as important as the air you breath, if you intend to successfuly journey through this country, it is imperative that you learn about the culture, the history and the economy. Yet the most precious commodity you can come accross, is a friend... Because doors will be open to you in ways you've not yet experienced before. This book is a friend.

  2. This book is a great help in deciphering Brazilian customs and subtle cues. I would also recommend "A History of Brazil" and "The Brazilian Sound: Samba, Bossa Nova and the Popular Music of Brazil" as essential works that also give vital background.

  3. It is very small and quick to read. However, it was amazing how much quality information the author could pack into such a small space. She lived 18 years in Brazil, and as a Brazilian reading the book, I can tell she knows what she was talking about. It was also curious for me to learn about things that I always took for granted, or that I thought were specific to my personality rather than from the culture. Unfortunately it is out of print as of this writing (Dec 2003). I hope it gets reprinted soon.
