  1. My husband and I used this book on both of our trips to Mexico and found it fabulous. Detailed maps of the major cities. It helped us get through Cancun, Chetumal and Merida which are difficult on your own - driving or walking. This book gave hotels and restaurants for all travel budgets and if ever in Merida, I recommend the Hotel Trinidad Galleria. Quite a sight! Also detailed the ruins and gave some background. This book gave good tips for traveling to other countries too. Highly recommended for Mexico traveling.

  2. This guide is packed with a ton of great info. This book is indespensible for those traveling off the beaten path in the Yucatan, from the colonial cities to Mayan pyramids hidden in the jungle. With out this book I would have missed what became some of the highlights of my trip!

  3. While being a good general guide it is not, as others seem to believe, for those of you interested in getting "off the beaten path". You will end up visiting the same sites as the rest of the thousands that have purchased this book and others like it. Also, keep in mind that this book has not been updated in three years and is not to be relied upon heavily. I do believe the Lonely Planet series is quite helpful, but remember that you are the true judge of what you see and experience.

  1. We took a trip to Belize at the end of '05/beg of '06. The info in this book was a little outdated and not very useful. Save yourself the trouble and buy the Lonely Planet, that's the only book you need.

  2. this book did cover low bidget places and was very handy. it also covered more upscale loactions but did indicate that quite well. (we visited Belize 10/06). the prices were pretty accurate and the reviews as well.
one of our favorite places in san pedro was a 'hole in the wall' almost literally that this book recomended. it cost about $1 american for 2 of us to have breafast (home made belizian style breakfast tacos) and we would get a slice of homemade cake to take with us for lunch. we also stayed at rubies and breakfasted there often. rubies was definetly the best stay for the money.

we also used this book in san ignacio and found it extremely helpful and again in belize city (belmead i think). it told us everything we needed to know.

i higly recomend this book for any savy low budget traveler.

  3. This is my first time purchasing a "rough guide" book. Our travel group had several different books and was consistently disappointed by the inaccurate descriptions of hotels. For instance, one hotel was located RIGHT on the airport runway at one of the islands - without mention from the book. The location of hotels and destinations near those hotels was also WAY off - specifically in San Pedro. Luckily, we had two other guide books to reference.

I judged the book by it's cover and pictures and regret it. I will not use this book series again.

  1. NOTE: Josh has just finished updating for the new 7th Edition, which is in press and should be out by Fall 2007. The 6th Edition was published in November 2004. Joshua Berman spent months traveling and living in Belize while working on the major update for the 6th Edition. The Moon Handbook has been my favorite Belize Travel Guide since the 4th Edition and it's great to have a fresh update! Just, FYI, I am a marine scientist, living and working in Belize half-time...about 6 months each year. From my perspective, this handbook gives the most TRUE represenation of Belize... and I have all the others on my bookshelf. Unfortunately, the publisher selected a cover photo that was taken on a Pacific Ocean Coral Reef. The species on the front cover to not exist in Belize. Fortunately, the information inside the book IS most accurate. Just remember, during your visit, "If ya drink di watta, ya mus com bak".

  2. Really perfect for all trips to Belize. Was very helpful and complete. Nice job.
    J.

  3. It's fitting that this 6th edition of Moon Handbooks Belize has won the prestigious Lowell Thomas Award granted by the Society of American Travel Writers (SATW) in the Best Guidebook category. Joshua Berman has done a splendid job adapting and updating a previous edition by Chicki Mallan - Moon Handbooks Belize has been reborn! It's a state-of-the-art example of Moon's new book design, and you won't find a better guide to Belize than this.

  4. i found this handbook absolutely fantastic during my 4-weeks' travel through belize! the authors really know their stuff. every recommendation was great. i found it much better compared to the lonley-planet non-up-to-date version.

  5. My husband and I just returned from a 16 day trip to Belize, and this was definitely our favorite guidebook on the trip! We bought this book as well as Fodor's Belize, and together they were the perfect combo. The Moon book was right-on for budget travelers who want to be more than a tourist--the authors' sense of humor & interest in getting to experience new cultures really made the book. We used the local buses for transportation and tried to stay in places under $50 US (which isn't hard in Belize!), and this book was right-on with recommendations and descriptions. The only negative was that it is getting a little more out of date in regard to lodging, restaurants, and prices, but that's why we bought the Fodor's book as well (Fodor's Belize 2007 edition). Overall, this book is 5 stars, and because of it, we had an awesome trip!

  1. As the author of several travel guides to Belize (the latest of which is Explore Belize) and the author of Explore Costa Rica, I've been familiar with Lan's writing for many years.

Lan has consistently been one of the most prolfic writers about Belize and one of its biggest boosters. This book offers a compact summary of what life in Belize might be like. He interviews a crew of resident expats (many of whom I know), and there are plenty of maps, charts, and other info.

Personally, I've learned a lot from Lan about Belize, and I encourage you to buy this book. And do keep Lan and myself informed of changes and your own experiences. Because this is the way to improve travel guides.

  2. Mr. Sluder is very knowledgeable about his subject, but does not try to sugarcoat the country to be an island paradise where you can live like a king on a peasant's budget. Unlike some of the other Belize-related expatriate or retirement articles I've seen, Lan tells you more of the difficulties and intricacies of this country!

  3. The Belize Adapter Kit will not disappoint you. Whether you are a first-time visitor to Belize or a seasoned traveler considering permanent residence, you will find a great deal of helpful information here. Mr. Sluder has managed to create a guide that is as useful to the novice as it is to those with significant knowledge about the country.

You will learn the pros and cons of life in Belize and gain a respect for the practical aspects of living and traveling in the country. This is not a romanticized look at a tropical paradise, but an unbiased and truthful guide to daily life in a place that may inspire you - or frustrate you.

If you wish to know whether you should consider relocation to this remarkable country, the Belize Adapter Kit will be an invaluable resource. It is also extremely useful to those considering a vacation here.

  4. I've been to Belize many times and read most of the guide books available.
Although not technically a tour guidebook, it's suitable for that purpose, in addition to its stated goal.
And as for that, it's absoultely the best thing out there for anyone considering investing, working or living in Belize.
Lan loves Belize and its people but he gives you straight talk and advice, nothing is glossed over or ignored.
The book covers everything one might need, such as the scoop on getting medical care, dealing with real estate transactions, finding attorneys, what businesses are best to invest in, and all the everyday needs that one will encounter.
And, of course, there is plenty of information on fun things to do and places to see while visiting or living in this friendly country.
    A must have book!

  5. Based on the title, I had been hoping for something different, but found this little more than a glorified Tour Guide. Much of the information is the type shown in your standard Tourist Brochure or website, and I thought the overall tone a bit condescending.

A much better book for these purposes is "Inside Belize" by Tom Barry. It offers a well researched, in-depth view of the Belize economy, politics and culture.
