1. Having done a 21 day shoot for our "Best Caribbean Beaches" DVD on Amazon, here, I can say this book was an invaluable resource. It would have been 5 stars, but Fodor's continues not to include pictures. They have great maps, with beaches located, and well described. They even have the Ferry routes in the Virgin Islands so you can plan your trips. (Though my old Ferry almost sank when it blew an engine in 5 foot swells! Luckily, we were rescued.) I strongly recommend this as a factual resource. However, if you want to see and hear what Caribbean Beaches look like, check out our DVD after reading this book.

   I just received the 2004 edition from the publisher (54th Edition), and like all of the others I've purchased through the years, it is a treasure.

   Although I have owned and operated a yacht in the past (the Wild Goose, a 36' ketch-rigged trimaran), I am now boatless. But you don't need to own a boat to appreciate and find this volume useful. Are you contemplating a vacation in the vicinity of the Bahamas, Turks, Caicos, or the Dominican Republic? If you are, you will find this volume useful. Of course, if you are a yachty, you'll find it indispensable. Don't leave home without it.

   What's in it? Maps, charts (not navigational, but informational), photos, drawings (especially of islands as seen from the sea--very useful if you're on a boat, viewing a strange landfall) and page after page of details and decriptions of available facilities.

   This book is updated yearly, and is just what the doctor ordered when you are entering a strange port without "local knowledge." And for the tourist, the same thing applies. For the skipper and crew of a small yacht, it's indispensable. For the tourist, it's a very handy guide.

1. I've used this as a guide on three trips to Florida, and highly recommend it. I learned about some things to do that were not covered in less detailed guides. The book gives a lot of background and detail on some things that aren't covered well (or at all) in other guides. This includes just the right amount of information on how to arrange for night-time viewing of turtles laying eggs, for instance, and covers some attractions (such as Butterfly World, north of Miami) that I really enjoy, you which get little or no mention in many guides to Florida. Be aware that the series of which this manual is a part makes no effort to cover hotel and resturaunt reviews--Those are in a different Michelin series. If you can possibly live with this limitation, I highly recommend the book!
