  1. has something for everyone. treasure hunting. island living. pets. boating. rescue at sea. very genuine. well written.

dave gale is a good story teller.

  2. Excellent story about life in the Abacos. You truly get the feeling of what they were going through and how wonderful it was(is)and also of their struggles. A must read for anyone interested in the out islands.

  3. Dave Gale has a lovely perspective not just on island life but on life as a whole. It's easy to think that a tropical paradise such as the Bahamas would simply provide a simple, idyllic existence, but as he describes it I was amazed at the richness and variation, hardships and quirky characters. All in all, a very enjoyable read.

  4. The Bahamas and the Caribbean are a special passion for me so it comes as no surprise that I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Having lived on an island before I can tell you that Dave Gales' accounts of island life are without question. Elbow Cay and the rest Abaco are some of the best Bahamas has to offer along with the other so called Out Islands. If you have ever wondered what it was or would be like to live on an island make this a part of your library.

  1. I thought this was a great effort to present the true Bahamas, but unfortunately, there are some inaccuracies that seem to confuse The Bahamas with other countries in the West Indies, particularly in referring to the language. Bahamians would never refer to their dialect as patois. (that's Jamaica and other countries). Bahamians just call their English dialect "Bahamian dialect". And some of the words are not in general use as stated, e.g. nyam is Jamaican, and bobo, if used, more usually refers to Rastas, not morons.

  2. I love to thoroughly research and plan vacations, gleaning recommendations and experiences from as many independent sources as possible. Therefore, I ordered BOTH Frommer's Bahamas 2007 and Bahamas for Dummies to get two different opinions. Bahamas for Dummies repeats Frommer's hotel and restaurant recommendations WORD-FOR-WORD. The Dummies who wrote this book obviously did NO independent research of their own. In fact in turns out Wiley published both books. The only redeeming feature is the cute little post-it flags, that I can stick inside my Frommers guide book!

  3. I found the guide had a lot of useful information about the best hotels, restaurants and tours. This is exactly the information I needed. It also had a great section on the pro's and con's of each major island. This was helpful in figuring out where I wanted to vacation. I have read a lot of information on the web, and frommer's website, but I found this guide to have it organized more efficiently and it is more comprehensive. It was an easy and fun read and also had information on the history of the Bahamas. I really enjoyed it and it helped with my vacation planning.

  1. While Frommer's is the king of travel advce and I have sworn by thier advice and knowledge while traveling, this particular eddition is no better than 2005 or 2006. It is a re-tread. So if you have a version from 2006 or 2005, stay with it. There is really no new information worth spending the money on. While I do not realy fault Frommer's for using old information, since not much changes in the caribbean, it should be more clearly noted that there is not much new in thier book.

  2. This book is an excellant choice if needing info on ports visited by cruisers - helped a lot, as it was our first cruise. Lots of good advice from start to finish.

  3. Great book to throw in your backpack and take with you on the cruise. You can bone up on a bit of the history and it will get some ideas ffor excursions or places to visit on the islands.

  1. The Bahamas are generally mistreated by guide book companies. The Open Road Guidebook is almost four times shorter then that on Tahiti, while the Rough guide is much shorter then that on Jamaica. Guidebooks tend to treat the Bahamas as a place where you rest, drink & dive. Very little background info and almost nothing about the Out Islands. Lonely Planet had by far the best book, but then with the new format in 2005 came a very poor and short edition, so LP has definitely lost that title. Now IMHO Frommer's is the best. Closely followed by Fodor's. They have the normal info for package tour guys, but they also have some interesting background reading. And all of it is in good proportions, unlike the Insight Guide which has a stunning amount of background reading but very little practical info.

  2. Very very good resource of information, made me feel a lot more comfortable with my hotel choice and what part of the island I am staying on. Very excited to go on my trip and see if they were right.

  1. I have several Bahamas cruising guides and this is the BEST ! I live in the Bahamas and have found things here I did not know. It is accurate, easy to read, and well written. I highly reccomend this book to anybody that is interested in cruising the Bahamas or even those interested in the Bahamas at all. A REALLY GOOD BOOK ! Head and shoulders above the rest of the Bahamian cruising guides!

  2. During a cruise through the Bahamas in the spring of 2000, this guide was a great disappointment. The BA charts are woefully lacking in detail -- especially depths -- and discussions of shore sites are in many cases unduly negative. We visited a number of places about which Mr. Wilson used disparaging terms and found them delightful. Coverage of the Exumas assumes one is approaching from the banks side and gives little attention to approaches from Exuma Sound. In some places the author gets on a soapbox for environmental concerns and in other places he tacitly approves practices (such as feeding fish at snorkel sites) that are not ecologically sound. Fails to acknowledge existence of the Explorer series of charts that are by far the best for practical use in the area. In general, the "yellow pages" info is current and useful, but all things considered, there are better cruising guides for the Bahamas.

  3. I used this book from April to June 2000 cruising the Bahamas on our way to Panama via the Windward Passage.I found if the wind blew from the east then the book did not give information on other anchorages that one could change to E.G. White Cay Berri Islands and Stanley Cay in the Exums. In other instances the best anchorages were not even mentioned by Wilson. The books G.P.S. waypoints were dangerous wrong E.G.George Town .The lack of information on entrances from the sound to the banks E.G. The entrance to Thunder Ball Cave area .It is my belief that this book is dangerous and it is best to find another guide book.

  4. I belive this book to be the most imformative book.well written.great photos.

  5. I liked the look of this one in the shop and at a first glance it looked like it would have all the info we needed for our cruise on our sailboat through the Bahamas. We found that some topics were ridculously written about, e.g. Gulf Stream Crossing. We agree that this is an important mention but the advice was completely a no brainer. Real advice like, what to do if your'e caught in a norther in the Gulf Stream might have been useful. We also found the author to be non-chalant when talking about passages and channels. We had a terrible experience because of this, read the North West Channel LIght - we encountered 10 foot chop there! Also, the Whale Cay info is not highlighted enough. This is an extremely dangerous area that you MUST study and know before crossing here. We found much of the info for the islands innaccurate. A complete waste of money! We are now looking to purchase the Yachtsma's Guide instead.

  1. I was skeptical at first when I saw this, but I was getting bored just knowing the names of the fish I came across. I thought this would turn out like Fish Flips(eg only names of fish listed for each pic), but it has a LOT more to offer. There are written descriptions for each pic, that don't just list facts, but also explain how to find & approach sea life (eg. Size, time of day, hiding spots/location, animals behavior, etc.), I found this really useful, because after tooling around with my camera, I was getting tired of only getting snapshots of fishtails. The book held up great UW; the pages just got sticky bc I didn't rinse it off initially, but I left it overnight in fresh water and there was no problem after that. Since i started taking along scuba dic for dives, it's been abused more times than tina turner, & its still in good shape....thus far. I do think it's better to get familiar with it on your surface interval vs trying to learn underwater. But all in all, it's a really good idea.

  2. Waterproof materials, GREAT photos, extremely useful information. I would recommend this clever reference guide to any diver. I can't wait for more scuba dic volumes! Retractable device a must, too.... places marine species identification literally at your fingertips.

  3. Just in the first five minutes I learned to much about the world under the sea.Great book.

  4. I like its physical size since its large enough to easily utilize while checking out interesting animals, yet not overly big and clumsy so as to interfere with your equipment. With the animal's photo on one side of the page and its environmental aspects discussed on the opposite side, e.g., size, hiding areas, and behavior, it helps enlarge one's knowledge and appreciation for subject. And I first tested its `waterproof' capability in my marine aquarium, where it was left for 30 minutes, then removed and cleaned in freshwater. Still looks like new, and I'll test it somewhat further when I go to the Caymans in the near future. I'm already looking forward to Vol. 2. Bob Goemans

  5. I'm a recreational diver at the moment and I love this reference guide to some of the amazing stuff you can encounter while diving! Although it's just a small sample of what you'll run into underwater, it's a very informative and helpful guide to browse through before and after your dives to give your dive a fun scavenger hunt! It comes with a retractable clip that prevents it from getting lost or misplaced. A great gift for those considering becoming a scuba diver and veterans alike. Even if you don't go diving it will take you into the amazing underwater world through the wonderful pictures along with a description of the marine life shown.
