  1. I just returned from a whirlwind trip to Sydney -- only one week, and I wouldn't have seen half the things I did without this guide! It's small and portable, with a nearly indestructible cover. More importantly, it hits the highlights with some detail and gives little interesting things to see and do, not just the standard touristy stuff. Great maps and helpful phone numbers and even business hours for some places...I will definitely get a similar guide for future trips.

  1. Part family memoir, part history and part travelogue, In Tasmania is a sweeping portrait of a little-visited part of Australia with a surprisingly rich and, at times, brutal backstory.

Shakespeare moves to Tasmania with his wife for a bit of peace and quiet after writing a lengthy and critically acclaimed biog of Bruce Chatwin, but the writer in him can't stop digging around for interesting stories and soon he's uncovered two different strands of his family that chose to emigrate to the island. One of them, Anthony Fenn Kemp, was a 'founding father' of sorts who had dreams of being an antipodean George Washington - not that he ever came close.

And Shakespeare doesn't stop there - he details the devastating destruction of Tasmania's native inhabitants - both human and animal - and travels to the four corners of the island to tell its story and that of its first European settlers.

I found this book an interesting and enlightening read and even if you've read books before about the founding of Australia you will find plenty here that is new. The rich portraits of inhabitants alive and dead, the tabloid scandals of yesteryear, the birds, the animals and the rich soil of Tasmania all have their fascinating stories told here.

  1. After 30,000 km of roads I can assure that this book is well made and will not fall apart in the heat and dust of Australia's outback! In addition it is a great route planning guide to both the well known as well as less well known trips around Australia's outback.

  1. I truly enjoyed reading this book as I was able to learn the most essential aspects of living and working in Australia. This book features great advice on how to prepare yourself for the big move "Down Under", and what to expect from this new country. It also gives you a reality check on life in Australia as a new immigrant with all the challenges one must face. I really enjoyed the detailed list of "Aussie Real Estate Jargon" as I will need to refer to it when I will be looking for an apartment in Sydney. There are so many useful and practical information and advice in this book such as tips on how to find a job. This book has given me the confidence to move to Sydney as I feel prepareed and armed with the right information needed to make a good start Down Under. I have also read others books on "Living and Working in Australia", and this book is the best so far as it has the highest quality of content compared to the other ones.

  3. I came across this book almost by accident and I was surprised by how easy to read and useful it is.
The prices and costs may not be up to date but these can be determined by surfing the net. Well worth the price and the effort.
Like I said, a must - read for anyone headed to Australia for over 3 weeks.

Bear in mind however that this version has not been updated for a few years.
