1. I got this book fro the holidays from my girlfriend. It's a book that I think would appeal to men and women, especially those with an urban humor.

   I hope it is going to be made into a movie. The book would translate well. Reading the novel is especially rewarding too. You get the sense Laurie Gwen Shapiro is a great wit to watch




2. I first picked up this book because it had an interesting title. On a pure whim I read it and enjoyed it more than I have any book in years. It was refreshingly funny yet it has substance that kept me interested. I couldn't put it down. I have told everyone I know that enjoys reading to get this book. It is sharp,funny and a sure cult classic.



3. Documentary film director and producer Laurie Gwen Shapiro's "The Unexpected Salami", her literary debut, offers the improbable adventures of a young Jewish New Yorker in Australia and her friends, an up-and-coming Australian rock-and-roll band. The plot is truly improbable - I won't divulge it - and it's one laced with ample doses of humor. Somehow she manages to tie up all the loose ends of her plot in brisk, crisp prose. I must confess I did not find it all that interesting when I first read it, but to her credit, Ms. Shapiro is a sharp, funny observer of human relationships, especially with regards to a cultural clash between an American and her Australian friends. It is one of the better examples of "Chick Lit" which I've stumbled across.



4. What a fabulously funny novel! The absurdity & the characters were first rate. The main character, Rachel Ganelli, comes back to New York from Australia after the "murder" of one of her roommates & the real chaos begins when her half-Jewish half-Italian family has to take care of the supposive corpse. There's even a romantic plot interwoven in the trials and tribulations of these quirky characters trying to do good. I could go on about this book for days, but I don't want to give any of the good stuff away. If you love chick lit in spite of your punk/hipster lifestyle, then this is the perfect book for you. And if you just love entertaining, well-written light lit, then it's perfect for you as well. Go read this!



5. It started out so good. It took me in so successfully that I pushed myself through the pointless ramblings and storylines that had nothing to do with the main story, waiting for the spark in the beginning to come back. Didn't happen. Uggh. The main storyline was still good though and I wanted to know what happened to the main characters in the end.
   
   I was disappointed. It seems like the author just shoved a lot of unrelated tidbits together or something.

1. I've had an adventure finding a portable recharger for my Verizon Chocolate phone. This one is perfect! A word of warning: this little thing gets really hot, and completely drains the life out of the battery used for power. But, it beats having a dead cellphone.

1. This is an extremely useful field guide for lovers of wildlife in Australia. Many animals are nocturnal and leave only small clues to their presence. With this guide I have been able to sleuth out a number of previously unobserved species. The descriptions of tracks, scats and traces are clear and thorough and there are many useful photographs, illustrations and distribution maps.



2. This is a fantastic book. All very useful information, hard to find all in one place. I don't know of any similar work for the general reader.

   Nothing compares to being able to know that an animal you rarely or never see actually lives in an area and has passed by recently. The descriptions of footprints and the drawings were clear enough that I was able to determine an exact species from macropod (from a good set of prints) on the basis on the footprint alone. This also matched up with the expected distribution for this species (also shown in the book, next to its scat picture). I haven't come across any random bones in the bush yet to be able to identify from the descriptions given in the book, but the section on bones is as clear and concise as the rest of the book.

   The coverage of other sorts of signs (scraping, scratch marks, etc) is also quite handy and clear.

   There are some improvements I would like to see in any future editions. I would like to see a scale marker in *every* single scat picture. This would be preferable to taking all the photos at the same scale (which they mostly seem to be) because at that scale the droppings of the bats become very hard to distinguish. The *ideal* I think would be to have all the pictures at 'life size' from a particular distance, with a zoomed-in picture with a scale marker.

   *All* the pictures should be in colour (except the skeletal pictures). Each scat should have a description, and a picture of an unbroken and a broken pellet. Some are like this, but not all. The description for the scat could describe the changes in the scat throughout the year as the diet of the animal changes. This could at least be done for all the common and well-known animals.

   The other problem with the scat pictures is that they are of varying ages. The colour changes greatly with age (very fresh = very green, aging to various shades of brown). Some of the pictures are of semi-fresh scats, and the others are quite old.

   However, these issues do not detract from the usefulness or quality of this edition - I just hope to see some extra features in any future editions!

   It is a massive task to collect all this information and pictures, and even though this book is the only one of its kind that I know of for general readers, I am sure that if there were other books on the same topic, this would still stand out as a high quality and invaluable resource for australian naturalists!
