- Oh to be able to relocate to an exotic city and write for an occupation! That's what occurs in "A Year in Marrakesh". While other English citizens are touring Morocco, Peter Mayne relocated there, to become a part of the city of Marrakesh and to come to know it. There are many lively characters here, painted with a comprehensive brush that shows them to be, if not real people, than so realistic seeming that you never find yourself saying, "Yeah, right, like you'd actually meet someone like that."
Also, this book give a gentle entry into the mindset of average Muslim people.
This book will not shake your world-view, but it may give you the hankering to pick up stakes and relocate for a year or more. And isn't that what good travel literature is supposed to do?
- This bk was written in 1953. The author uses many French and Moroccan arabic phrases in his writing which makes the experiences & people he encounters feel more authentic but if you aren't familiar with those languages it'd be a frustrating read. Mayne's vignettes are quirky...I never felt as though I got to know him or like him but it was a fairly quick read so I didn't care that much.
There are other books that get to the heart of the Morocco better & deeper with more humor & humanity such as Tahir Shah's "The Caliph's House."

- Fantastic guides! Pocket size and easy to follow. The writers are hilarious and the shopkeepers are very appreciative when you walk in carrying the guide. They give you ideas on where to go, what to eat and where to shop, that other guides do not provide!
The only thing missing is an actual map!
- Cheap little foldout card in very small print that is hard to read. The free stuff found in Hotels is better.

2 comments about Wallpaper City Guide: Hanoi (Wallpaper City Guides) (Wallpaper City Guides (Phaidon Press)).
- This Hanoi guide offers new insight of the new modern hotels, clubs, and architecture of this city. I would recommend this guide if you are visiting Hanoi within 24 hrs, but no more that that. This book doesn't give details about where to go. Instead, it is a bunch of beautiful pictures of the city with a map and skyline of Hanoi.
- In another review, someone mentioned this seemed like a magazine article. That is pretty much the amount of detail you get with this book. There are some interesting tid-bits, but overall, I didn't think the recommendations were that great. Also one shop mentioned in the book that I looked for, I couldn't find. If this book were $5 USD, I would probably have given it three stars b/c I would have spent about that on a magazine with an article on Hanoi. For $9 USD, it's not worth the money.

2 comments about The Road Gets Better From Here.
- For anyone who enjoys one or more of off-the-beaten-track travel, motorcycle riding or following a crazy Australian around, this is a must read book. Adrian is a witty and compelling story teller whose descriptions of the remote places he visited and the characters he met very real and intensely readable.
- For a first book, Adrian Scotts travelogue is remarkably well written. It takes the reader along with him as he travels from the furthest reaches of Siberia to Europe, Via China and Central Asia. In the wake of rapidly growing global interest in independant travel by motorcycle, Adrian sets off for his first long distance interenational bike adventure with just a few vague ideas about how it may go. On the way he discoveres the real people and real hospitality of people living along his path.
Its a fun read for anyone with an interest in independant travel, an excellent read for anyone with an interest in the the former USSR, and a compulsory read for anyonne contemplating a first major motorcycle adventure.

3 comments about Japan.
- Hiroji Kubota takes the reader on a wonderful visual feast of Japan. His photos cover all aspects of Japanese life, from the very ancient to the very modern. The captions for the photos are at the back with an accompanying black and white print of the photo.
A beautiful coffee table book.
- I have sent 7 emials and made 5 phone calls and I still haven't received the book - its a month overdue and every emial I try and send you bounces back - your help page on the website doesnt work with my IE latest version browser - when I click on your customer service page it closes my browser everytime.
You suck - I used amazon several times and there are always problems - I want my money back and go elsewhere
- These photos cover so many facets of daily life in Japan. I traveled through Japan last year, even visiting a few of the places depicted in the book, and these photos evoked the same kind of emotion I had while being there. From the sumptious food and diverse culture to the juxtaposing of modern and ancient Kubota captures it all. If you love or are fascinated with Japan, then you will not be disappointed with this book.
