  1. I was not at all impressed with Argentina - Una Aventura Fotografica. For a Photographic Book of this Price one would expect a much higher level of quality. There were way too many photographs. The Images were mediocore to say the least. The Print quality was very bad. And the photographer tried to cover every Topic imaginable rather than selecting simply good Photographs. A Country as beautiful as Argentina deserves better.

  2. I purchased my copy in Buenos Aires. The print quality is comparable to any other coffee-table book. It has a very wide range of subjects, and sometimes you wish there were more photographs of certain vistas, and not as many of some others, but I would not say this detracts from the book. I keep mine on my coffee table and everyone who looks at it comments on the beauty portrayed in the images (I have even had someone ask to borrow it!). It's an older title and perhaps the artist's inexperience at the time of publication is to blame for what another reviewer found to be quite disappointing. If in doubt, order a used copy. It is a worthwhile title.

One reason the book has "way too many photographs" may be because it's subtitled: "A Photographic Adventure"?

  3. I don't understand the one bad review of this book. The photos are gorgeous and the publication/paper is very good quality. I have been a Photo Editor for 20+ years and found the photos to be excellent as well as informative. The author/photographer included all regions of Argentina which give the reader a very good idea of what the country looks like. Almost all text appears at the front and back of the book so as not to interrupt the flow of the visual material. The end papers contain captions for all photos and are translated into English and French. I bought this book because I am thinking of visiting Argentina and it has given me a very good idea of what to expect from each region.

  1. Lucas Bridges spent his life walking on eggshells in my opinion. He loved his adopted people the Yaghans and the Ona, yet he was never far away from his potential death in the many encounters he had with them. His book shows this tension at every turn. His ability to recall specific events and name the people is admirable. I recommend this book and a visit to his beloved Tierra Del Fuego. Although I did not get to his Harberton, I am incredibly fascinated with Ushuaia and surrounds, especially the mountain views. As a kid in Canada I watched Cowboys and Indians in movies and always I cheered for the Indians. Living now in New Zealand I cheer the Maori. The colonists called all the natives they met in all the continents "Indians" but now the native people have their own names.

  2. A year ago we visited Ushuaia and Estancia Harberton, where memories of the Bridges family are very much alive. (We were shown about Harberton by the great-great-grandson of Thomas Bridges.) We were very anxious to acquire a copy of Lucas Bridges's book, but it was out of print, even in its Spanish edition. So we were delighted when we discovered on Amazon that it was about to be published in a new hardcover edition, and even more delighted when we received the book and realized that Natalie Goodall (the grandmother of our 2007 tour guide) had written a new introduction and epilogue for it. The book will be doubly treasured, for the information it contains and the associations it brings. Blue skies! -- Dan Ford

  3. How Tierra del Fuego was settled.
The folly of early missionary work.
An anthropolocial study of the native people.
    The the hard ships and joys of settling a new land;

But at its heart a narrative by Mr. Bridges on himself and his family who possessed a love for its native peoples and land that came to define them. And Alas it's a tale of the progression of civilization and the displacement (absorption) of native cultures that has played out across this globe.
    Thanks Mr. Bridges

  4. This book is about the colonization of Ushuaia, the southernmost town in the world. Although every account is 100% non-fiction, reading it was a magical journey between the real and surreal. One moment you're taken on an exploratory expedition, and the next you're learning the mysterious and mythical ways of the native Ona indians and the author's fantastic ability to befriend them, penetrate their culture and become a real life "Running with Wolves" character. A must read for anyone thinking about visiting Ushuaia.

5 comments about BRAZILIAN ADVENTURE.
  1. This is contemporary American adventure: buy an SUV, watch game shows based on Lord of the Flies, try the risotto recipe Martha Stewart used on her ascent in the Himilayas. Please! Brazilian Adventure is the real thing for those who don't own their own snowshoes. Sure, the author and his companions set off with pith helmets worthy of Ralph Lauren and more elaborate gear than they'll ever use; true, Fleming is something of a good old boy circa 1932 Oxford style. Skin to be shed. When reality hits, which it does early in the adventure and continues to the bedraggled end, he rises to the occasion. The narrative is suffused with clear-eyed wit, honesty and optimism. I hope there are other Peter Fleming books out there.

  2. Every so often I have to buy a new copy of Brazillian Adventure because I lend my copy to someone and they flatly refuse to return it again. This is one of the most engaging and good-humoured travel books ever. It was Fleming's first adventure and his first book - yet it became a classic work going into several editions early on and being used in schools as a study piece. It is seriously well written, and seriously engaging.

It starts with his blandly describing how he got involved in the expedition in the first place- answering an advertisement in the paper to go on a 'Fawcett hunt" (as he later called it). He thought he would go on a grand expedition to find the missing explorer Colonel Fawcett and get a little hunting done at the same time. There have been numerous books and studies done on the disappearnce of Fawcett in Brazil in the 1920's - to this day no one quite knows what happened to him, and as it turns out the expedition that Fleming was joining was not going to throw new light on matters either.

In fact the trip deteriorated badly the moment they hit Brazil, and Fleming's dry wit turns it all into a hilarious read - although it must have been desparately uncomfortable for them all. The expedition Leader was incompetent, the expedition split into two warring factions and they all ended up in a race back down the Amazon to try to get the banks in time.

Peter Fleming, in case you didn't know, is the brother of the 'James Bond' author Ian Fleming - a talent for writing seemed to run in the family. Peter continued his travels and writing career but I think this first book is the best of them all. There is also a wonderful biography on his life available but I think that is now out of print.

  3. I brought this book for my Brazilian trip this past Dec. I found this book slow and boring in the beginning. This may be due to the fact that the author used lot of what I assume to be late 19th and early 20th century references which I have no idea about and the British writing. But after half way through, I learned to read past the subtle British writing and concentrate on the story and this make the book more enjoyable.

  4. I bought this book because I am fascinated by South America, the Amazon River, etc..and also because this looked like a real life adventure book searching for clues into the dissappearance of Major Fawcett.

This book starts out slow because of the british style of writing in the early 20th century. For me it was too "flowery" and maybe that is not the right word. I nearly stopped reading the book because of it, but I didn't. Thankfully, the last half of the book, describing the race back to civilization, was much better.

This book is okay, but nowhere near great

  5. This is certainly not an adventure book in the classical sense. The style of writing does not allow for it. Buy it for its British humor and charm, not for adventures which don't take place.
