  1. The Flying North by J Potter, is one of the best bush pilot books bar none, about flying in Alaska's early days when a hand full of pilots and mechanics set the stage for the transition from dog teams to aircraft and Alaska's early development. A book that should be on the shelf of all those interested in aviation history. I also recommend, Flying North South East and West, a non-fiction book on the seldom covered arena of Cargo flying. It takes you from a young couples struggle to survive in Alaska, to the hot sands of Africa and all the time wrapped around aviation from bush flying on an North Pole expedition, flying cargo worldwide, to flying Boeing jets off icy runways in the north country. Both a terrific read.

  1. Upside: The black & white pictures of Denali are alone worth the price for me. The brief history of the area, park, and people is intriguing and digs beneath the superficial facts. I appreciate the holistic, cultural context of the historical text.

Downside: I cannot help but feel like the organization of the content is lacking, particularly the text. I was thinking the pictures would be predominantly of the parks (i.e. mountains, rivers, animals, etc.) but the opposite is true (not that the landscape pictures aren't phenomenal because they certainly are).

Verdict: If you're big on Denali, as I am, you'll find value in it (or if you want something small and unique for a coffee table). Otherwise stick to your druthers.

  1. Wow, this is a great book! My wife and I are planning a trip and this book has been worth every penny we spent. It gives you tremendous insight into the various cruise lines, what to expect, do's and don'ts, excursion planning etc.

If you're spending the money to go on an Alaskan cruise, buy this book, it will help you pick the right one for you.

  2. The book was shipped to me in very good condition and was here in 7 days. I find it very informative and am anxious to see Alaska. We have cruised before and Royal Caribbean is our cruise line of choice. I was interested in the book more for the suggestions for excursions, what the weather would be and what to pack. I would definitely order through amazon again.

  3. I bought several books before my Alaska cruise, and this was by far my favorite. It presents all the necessary information about the different cruise lines, ships, routes, and ports of call in an organized fashion without wasting space on glossy photos and rambling chatter. It was very easy to open the book right to the information I wanted. I don't mean to imply that the book is dry, however; the authors do express opinions and the whole thing is a pleasant read. There are nice sections with information about cruising and about the history of the area. This guide does not go into great detail about the larger cities, like Vancouver, but it gives a good overview while still being small and light enough to easily carry on your trip.
