2 comments about Noel Wien: Alaska Pioneer Bush Pilot (Classic Reprint Series (Fairbanks, Alaska), No. 7.).
  1. This book is one of my favorites. I am buying another as I have worn down the original paperback that I found in a used bookstore. The book follows the life of Noel Wien from his beginnings in rural Minnesota to his eventual ownership of the largest Airline in Alaska. If you are a pilot or if you are an aviation afficianado, this book will appeal to you. The stories are very readable and the writer does a great job of making them storylike. He ties Wien into Alaska's history, especially the early days of aviation.

  2. I see that this is now out as a reprint and inasmuch as I just finished reading an original hardcover, I am glad to see it is being made available to keep alive the incredible story of Noel Wien and his pioneering of bush pilot flying in Alaska.

To those of us who fly in modern airplanes with marvelous instruments over well laid out air routes with accurate maps and GPS's, the stories of the exploits of Noel Wien and others in the early days of flying in Alaska read like fiction.

To begin with, Alaka is down right inhospitable to airplanes, especially airplanes in the 1920's. The hardships and problems of operating an open cockpit aircraft in that environment would be enough to discourage all but the most resolute and most talented pilots. Just living in Alaska in those times was only for the rugged and adventurous.

The author has told Wien's story in a most readable way which will leave you shaking your head at his experiences and difficulties, yet filled with admiration that there was a man so filled with the spirit of adventure, courage and talent that he stood head and shoulders over those that followed him, both as a pilot and a man.

  1. Keep your $10 and search the web instead. 94 small pages. Mostly history, very little info to help you plan your trip. "A Traveler's Guide" - I don't think so.

  2. Totally useless book...more like a nice travel brochure. Took us more time to order it (and return it) than to read it. If you need/want a book, spend the money and get a Lonely Planet instead.

  1. I met the author and his wife during my visit to Denali National Park last summer. They recently built a wonderful lodge, EarthSong Lodge, in which they share natural history and help their guests plan hiking and backpacking trips. Wonderful place, and wonderful hosts. Highly recommend anyone going to Alaska to buy Jon's book and stay at EarthSong Lodge.

1 comments about North to Alaska: A Studebaker story.
  1. When viewing the cover of this book and the title, I wasn't expecting much. Well, the first half of this book reminded me almost of being in the same rehlm of "The Last Season" by Eric Blehm and John Krauker's "Into The Wild". A very good excellent read I couldn't put down. The story begins with a young man and his buddy off in a Studebaker to buy a "special bargain" military vehicle in Anchorage Alaska and drive it back. When things don't work out and they don't get the military vehicle, the main character's friend decides to fly home before winter sets in. The man in this story stays in Alaska hoping to still get the military vehicle, and when the deal doesn't pan out, it is already the beginning of October, some would say a bit too late to start his journey back home from Anchorage to Montana. The young man still decides to set out on a very new and undeveloped Alcan Hwy., today known as the Alaskan highway, in his Studebaker. On such a late start, this man goes through a comming winter hell on a virtical steep highway of mud and disaster looming at every turn almost. Harsh winter weather and keeping the Studebaker running was an adventure in itself, besides this lone man comming close to dying of the elements in the Alaskan-Yukon Territory in a vast wildreness. THIS IS A SURVIVAL STORY! THIS STORY IS AN AMAZING JOURNEY! The first half of the book is simply one of the best adventure reads I have come across. The second half is the man finding his old Studebaker that he did the original trip in and his adventure as an older man traveling the highway again in it's modern stage. The second half goes off a bit into his personal accounts of being a born again Christian and the message of Chritianity he leaves to many along the way, but that is also a great story in it's own modern way with the people he meets along the way. This book would make a great movie.
