  1. A wonderful insight not just into the cold mosquito ridden vastness of Alaska, the life of native people, the eccentricities of the inhabitants, but the spiritual searching of the author.

    Beautifully written.

  2. I was enjoying the book UNTIL the part where he and his family arrive in a campground outside of Fairbanks.

As he is taking a stroll, he comments that he sees several campers with "Jesus Loves You" and "Are you saved?" He then HAS to add these comments "Where do all these people come from?" and that "I wish they would stay away."...or something to that effect. He then closes the paragraph by stating, "I could not get away fast enough."

Gee this guy really shows some tolerance. He has no idea who these people are and yet he has to put THIS in his book???...which is TOTALLY not necessary. Sorry but this book has been "deep sixed" after I read it.

  3. Brian Keenan is undoubtedly a talented writer. He conjures up the places and inhabitants of his Alaskan journey with vivid precision. At first, his fumbling cultural faux pas provided some amusement. But eventually, they got frustrating and detracted from my enjoyment of his story. There's some self-effacing humor throughout as he confesses to his cluelessness, but when I got to a chapter in which he imagined a spirited conversation between himself and a crow, I gave it up. By that point, Keenan reminded me of the character of the BBC reporter in Robert Altman's "Nashville." Too "deep" for his own good, and kind of missing the point.

  1. I am always happy to see a new collaboration from author Debbie S. Miller and Jon Van Zyle and this offering doesn't disappoint! This is a great book to use when introducing school age children to the great state of Alaska. With the help of a bald eagle we travel through 3,100 miles of Alaska covering all five regions--Southeast, Southcentral, Southwest, Interior, and Arctic. Each area highlighted receives one illustration and one page of text. The back of the book contains Alaska facts, State symbols, Climate records, and has additional information on all the Alaskan special places covered in the book's text. I would love to have seen the Fairbanks area as well as the farthest north community in North America, Barrow, also included, but Alaska IS a big state and perhaps those areas as well as others will be included in the next (I hope there will be a next!) book.

  1. The book lost me in the first seven pages of whining. It contains nothing new or unique in its information or documentation of the authors eating their way through Alaska. A complete waste of money.

  2. This book was given to us as a gift when we were planning our trip to Alaska. It answered all the questions we had. It is written by RVers and includes what RVers need to know. It has loads of information about where to camp and what to see and do and it put my mind at ease about driving the roads. I recommend it for any RVers planning to go to Alaska. It was a great help.

  1. THis book is almost perfact for those people who are looking for an Alaska guide book. Some information good be more specific though..

  2. This book gives a brief overview of the various regions in Alaska to consider, but focuses more on providing knowledge needed to backpack successfully in the state. The chapters on techniques (including river crossing, snowfield travel, and glacial travel) and wildlife are particularly useful. There is also a chapter on navigating via compass and map, which is helpful since there are very few trails in Alaska. This is a good first read for someone planning their initial backpacking expedition in the nation's largest state. For the more advanced Alaskan, it probably would not be too helpful.

  3. As always, Molvar gives us an in-depth look at what we need to know: the weather, the terrain, the animals and their normal habitats, reading from maps, packing supplies, essentials on clothing, what foods on the trail to avoid and what to watch for, how to interpret the forests, etc. There is very little in the book that a backpacker or angler would not find pertinent to his visit to Alaska. The writing flows smoothly and evenly, and no part gets greater treatment than the rest. I recommend this as a useful manual to hikers and campers ready to visit Alaska, both novice and veteran. Molvar's firsthand experience shows on every page.

  1. Very inspirational. In todays world it is very rare to come across people that are so committed to a cause that they go to such an extreme to tell the world. On the back of the book it says, " They inspired us as living examples of the challenge and joy following the Spirit's nudging." I found this quite true!!
Pass the word, tell your friends! Excellent for gift giving.

  2. Having had the priveledge to spend time with the Martins when they were in Alaska I can attest to the heart they had for the work they were doing for the Lord and what a colection of stories they had from their incredible trip. Just think all the way in that old John Deere tractor. A true, incredible story of dedication, commitment, and faith.

  1. As a person that has visited Alaska and loved the visit I enjoy reading about Alaska. My stay at Anchorage was pleasant and would love to return. The pictures are nice and entertaining. Just a little bit of more information needed to really make this book better than it is.

  1. This book was invaluable during our recent inspection of the property we purchased in Alaska. This format is easy to understand and it was easy to identify and differnetiate between the different species of animals inhabiting our land quickly just from scat and tracks. A must have for anyone wanting to live outside the city in Alaska.

  1. I have to admit. I went to Alaska alone without a guidebook. But I had a great time anyway! When I came home, I decided to go back again, but this time with a guidebook. After going through many of the guides, we choose this one, because it was written by people who live and work in Alaska. It's full of practical tips ("Bears and Humans), offbeat trivia ("Chicken"), and subtle information ("Eskimo Etiquette"). From small towns way up north, to the rugged beauty of the Kenai Peninsula, and to the urban fun of Anchorage, this guide covers it all. Read this, and you'll be calling the airlines to book your flight the next week!

  2. Best Places Alaska is an outstanding travel guide that features only the 'best' restaurants, lodgings, and destinations in Alaska, including guides and outfitters in its lists of recommendations for particular Alaskan regions. An excellent, involving survey of Alaska's best places, Best Places Alaska is a recommended take-along tote.

  3. We used this book every day - and usually more than once. It is filled with great suggestions and recommendations. We found a few entries "outdated," but that can be expected. The suggestions for which shops to visit in small and large cities I found to be particularly helpful. Best book I have ever bought for travel.

  4. A fantastic guidebook describing some of the off beat places in Alaska. If you want the true Alaskan experience, get this book. It contains over 200 restaurant and lodging reviews and stories of the 'best' places in Alaska. One of the three must travel books (Milepost, Discovering Denali, and Best Places Alaska) if you are going to the Last Frontier.

  5. When planning our Alaska vacation to celebrate my parent's 50th anniversary, we bought this for them to read (since they don't use the internet). They read it with regards to all the stops on our itinerary for the cruise/land package we were taking and found it tremendously helpful!
