1. I found this book to be a quick and enjoyable adventure. As a pilot and aircraft owner, like the author, and one who has flown in the same country that the story takes place, I would have been critical of obvious errors in his use of terms and place names. This was not a problem however. I like flying/adventure books and this one fit that catagory well.

   The author tended to go into a little too much detail about his social life and seemed to mention eating in resturaunts, including what was ordered, a little too much. Some authors would have included the entire contents of this book into one or two chapters of a longer book. However, I think anyone who enjoys adventure in Alaska, flying, or gold prospecting would enjoy the book, as I did. It is well written and some of the author's roots in England seem to come through in his writing style.




2. Found it very hard to stay with the book and get it finished. The author spent so much time talking about having breakfast and getting prepaired i didnt care if i finished the book. One chapter actually talked about finding gold, but only to not tell you what they found. What good is a book about gold prospecting if there isnt any find?

1. Ray and Jenny chronicle their trip from Alaska's Bering Sea coastline northward around Alaska to Canada. In between the tales of frigid water, dodging ice floes and grizzly bears the reader is given a sense of the wonder and awe of what I would normally consider a bleak, frozen barren wasteland. Wildlife abounds, especially birds, and so do people. I was rather surprised at the number of villages they encountered along the way.
   
   The photos are all in black and white. This helps to convey a sense of cold, but color photos would have been nice. I'm sure that costs a lot extra to print though.
   
   While I will probably never do half the things this couple have done, this book is very inspirational to me. We are already making our own tarp, net-tent, backpacks and quilt based on Ray and Jenny's designs and I can't wait to hit the trails this fall. Books like this expand the mind as to what is possible. Buy a copy and give it to a couch potato near you.
