- This is Pamela Watson's Great African Adventure. She used a bicycle to travel from Dakar, Senegal to Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. I really enjoyed reading her account of her travels in Africa and found it very interesting. As a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer in Thailand, I could identify with her desire for adventure and her resourcefulness in carrying her plans out. It's amazing what a person can do once they put their mind to it and I think this trip, as well as writing her book will be a highlight of her life. I think she did a marvelous job at doing both.

- H. Paul Jeffers' Roosevelt The Explorer: Teddy Roosevelt's Amazing Adventures As A Naturalist, Conservationist, And Explorer is an outstanding biography of American President Teddy Roosevelt and one which focuses specifically upon his work in the areas of conservation and exploring. Dwelling on Roosevelt's enthusiastic appreciation of nature, and his struggles as President against tough opposition in order to create a system of national parks and to protect America's forests and wetlands from the depredation of development, Roosevelt The Explorer is a thoughtful, environment-oriented, biographical study of a truly great American leader, family man, outdoor enthusiast, and human being.

- This guide and journal proved invaluable during my recent trip to Tanzania. ID of wildlife was easy and the background info in the front was excellent reading prior to the trip. The checklist is an added bonus, allowed me to keep a record of the wildlife I saw during the trip. I didn't actually use the Journal pages for notes because I had along a small note pad that was sufficient plus I didn't want to mess up the pages with my sloppy writing!
- A friend gave me this before my recent trip to East Africa. Safari Journal was a great companion to have on safari. Not only a good guide book to most of the animals and birds, but I kept a journal of my trip in it. I highly recommend it - even if you don't go to Africa. The photos are superb.

- I really enjoyed reading this book and the wonderful stories. They really are true stories as my cousin Ginny and husband are the authors. I was facinated and couldn't put the book down until finished. How thrilling too have had such an adventure in this life. I highly recommend this book.

- "Growing Up In Africa" is a book which is entertaining, as well as educational, and one that I couldn't put down. It's about amazing, true-life adventure stories, told through the eyes of the authors' oldest daughter. What a wonderful five-year educational experience this had been for this family! I was most impressed by the way the authors were able to bring every detail to life; I felt as though I was living a lot of their experiences, and believe me, some of them were quite chilling! I especially l-o-v-e-d the story about Chester the monkey who was always charming to everyone until...well...you'll just have to read it for yourself.
My 7 year old granddaughter was especially intrigued with the story about the "The Haunted Yacht", so much so that she has asked me to read all of the stories to her. She's even read a little of it on her own, but said that some of the words were still a little too hard for her. Also, at the end of each story there are questions prefaced by "Did You Know?", that I bet would make a wonderful "must read" book for educators and their students. Are there any teachers out there? This is a MUST read!!!

- It was full of great stories that make you laugh one second and shiver the next at the thought that these "cute" stories really happened. The book is educational for kids but addictive fun for adults as well. The elephant sitting down on top of their car was scary but hilarious. It was just one of many great adventures. I highly recommend this book.

- This true account of Martin and Osa Johnson's photo safari into the depths of Africa takes place in the 1930s, when there were still unexplored places in the world. Unlike the adventurers of today who seem to concentrate more on the personal challenge, the Johnsons braved danger in many forms for the sake of showing the rest of the world the beauties of the Dark Continent as vividly as 1930s photography technology would allow. This book is a timeless adventure for all ages.

1 comments about The African giant;: The story of a journey.
- Suart Cloete started off in West Africa and travelled down to South Africa covering many of the countries in between in the late 1950's in the twlight of the colonial period. The book's essentially a chapter by chapter look at the countries he visited, the state of their economies, the education system, infrastructure, resources and standard of living, but written as a travelogue rather than a textbook. At the time he wrote, Cloete was full of hope for the african continent, a hope that shines through in the book when he talks about the excellent infrastructure and governance that was in place at the end of the colonial era and the potential for africa to develop (the "african giant" of the title).
Interestingly, at the time Cloete wrote, many african countries GDP's were greater than those of the SE Asian countries who were in the same "twilight of colonialism" period. A comparision Cloete makes. Most notable to me in reading this book 45 years after it was written were his descriptions of Nigeria and the Belgian Congo, two countries which were left with outstanding infrastructure and incredibly rich resources. Both have been abject failures and the contrast between their portrayl in the book and their current situation is more than saddening, it's tragic. If these countries couldn't make it, what hope is there for the rest of africa?
This book with it's bright hopes for africa's future leads you to think about what might have been, together with the opportunities and the wealth that was squandered (and is still being squandered) by the leaders of these and many other african countries.
