  1. This book is an absolute blinder. For any body like myself who is interested in diving or travel it will enthraul, for anybody else just the mere excitement of the story and the histerical situations a bunch of half naked Sechelian men and one very confused westerner can get into will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout. You may be interested to know that "Beyond The Reefs" is infact a double book, also containing my favourite of his "Sharks For Sale". Some of the things in here like being puled along side a hooked 30 foot female great white have to be read to be believed. As I said this book is fantastic and if youv'e ever read something like the beach then this is sure if only superficialy to appeal. ORDER A COPY NOW! INFACT ORDER TWO OR THREE!

  2. This book is a wonderful description of how the Seichelles were 50 years ago. It tells the ultimate (real) adventure of a man who had the strenght to change completely his life, and decided to live remote somewhere in the Indian Ocean. This is a story which will carry You in a world apart, and that it will not be any more. It makes you think of what and how much we have lost in our day after day rat race.
Read and escape for a while. Buy as many copies as You can and make it read to your children before it is too late for them.

  1. As an old fan of the Tintin adventure series, I was curious to see whether this was another adventure I had never heard of. It is actually part of a new series based on diaries Tintin may have kept during his travels.

The "diary" provides interesting facts and beautiful photographs which give the reader an intriguing glimpse of a continent which remains a mystery to many people. It depicts another world, especially in this age of technological advances.

The diary touches on the geography, culture, customs and the heritage of Africa. It also highlights the plight of Africa: poverty, famine, drought and political unrest.

I liked this book because any child would find it a fascinating introduction to a great continent. The format is fun and the information concise. Adult readers will want to add it to their collection of Tintin adventures to pass on to their kids.

  1. I recieved this book for Christmas, and even though I haven't read it all the way through, I'm very happy with it. It has very brilliant pictures, and beautiful maps. I also like the foldouts.

  2. The book contains over 300 magnificent photographs and illustrations of Egypt's monuments, treasures, archaeological discoveries and travelers. The reader will see the pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, the Faiyum, the Sinai, the Strait of Tiran, Nubia, Tanis, Esna, Luxor, Karnak, Philae, Dendera, Abu Simbel, Deir el-Bahri, the Valley of the Queens, Edfu, Kom Ombo and the Valley of the Kings, and will identify Ernesto Schiaparelli, Auguste Mariette, Jean-François Champollion and Howard Carter, among many famous discoverers. A history of this fascinating civilization, from ancient to modern Egypt, is included, as well as reconstructions of tombs, a bibliography and a glossary. For everyone to own.

  3. I first saw this book after a four-week trip to Egypt, where our travels included as much as we could see between the relocated monument Ramses II built in honor of himself at Abu Simbel to the vicinity of El-Qahira (Cairo) and its monuments and museums. This book is the one I have chosen to "keep my memories fresh" and share them with others- it is that good, and more. The illustrations are brilliant; the informative text is thorough and illuminating without being pedantic or burying the photos and drawings. I only wish the Cairo Museum had books as good as this one! If you love Egypt, this book will live an active life on your coffee table.

  4. i don't have this book yet. i have already told hubby that he's getting it for me for valentines. everytime i go into the bookstore, i take it off the shelf and spend about a half hour just leafing through it and looking at the pictures. if you are not sure whether you want to put out the money to buy this book, do yourself a favor and see if they have a copy at the bookstore and look through it. i know you'll be convinced that it's worth the price. i plan on ordering my book rather than buying it off the shelf. there are several fold out sections in the book and i want to make sure they are in good shape. the pictures of the temples and tombs in the book are great. also lots of maps. i admit, i'm an egyptology geek, but i think anyone who is interested in egypt will enjoy this book. if egypt is a hobby/passion, this book is a must have. i know it's a bit pricey, but you're payig for a book full of fantastic color photographs and you defintiely get what you are playing for. you get your money's worth with this book. my only regret is that i have to wait 6 weeks til i can have my copy in my hot lil' hands. :)

  5. I will not add too much to what the other reviewers have opined on this magnificent book. It is gorgeously illustrated with superior photographs and interesting drawings and geographical overviews.

It is the perfect book to get anyone interested in the never-ending treasures to be found in Egypt. The large-format size and the several fold-outs only add to the many and varied pleasures to be found in this book.

Also, it is somewhat scholarly and has some very useful timelines and genealogies.

Highly recommended to all Egyptophiles and lovers of antiquity alike.

  1. If you're going to buy one guide to Marrakesh, this has to be it. Combine Alison Bing's artful eye with her caring heart and her literate pen and you've got a handful right there in your hand. Alison is a great sleuth as she introduces you to hidden treasures even the locals don't know about. Most importantly, she's got a keen sense of the unique experiences that make Marrakesh such a wonderful alchemy of new and old, stylish and rustic.

  2. We used tips from Alison Bing on a recent trip to Marrakesh and were thrilled with the results. She offers suggestions to explore this city that stimulate all of your senses. From her descriptions of the city, you gather that she not only visited and explored this city in great detail but she also met and came to understand its inhabitants.

  3. After trying a few examples she gave, we quickly realized she had great taste, an eye for beauty, and really understood the wonders of foreign adventures. If she says do it - do it!

  4. Alison Bing knows Marrakesh inside out. Following her foot steps off the beaten path - made for an incredible, fairytale journey. You can tell she's done her research and is passionate about sharing her explorations. Now only if we knew what part of the world she'll review next...We'd sign up in a heart beat!

  5. If you buy this book, make sure to also buy another guidebook. And once you have that other book, you won't need this one.
This book did not have enough detail; we were in Marrakesh for several days and this book had so little detail that we had to buy another guidebook--which was hard to find in English in Marrakesh. Once we finally found anther guidebook (Rough Guide Morocco, ~US$35) it had all this one contained & more. You will want a more detailed guidebook in Marrakesh since everything is in Arabic or French. Very, very little is in English.
Also, the writer had a fun, flowery style that unfortunately did not leave room for information. Descriptions of Riads/hotels, restaurants, etc. came across as if the editor had removed key details to leave room for enthusiastic but non-descriptive language. We are big Lonely Planet fans but this book is Not Recommended.

  1. The 2003 edition has a signature bound in that pertains to Ecuador - our daughter who is travelling in South Africa found
out the hard way, check your book before you leave.

  2. I used this book in 2004 and it was outdated already. In Swaziland, street names had changes and Youth Hostels had moved--all before the research was conducted! Very disappointing! I used to highly recommend any "Let's Go" guide. However, when they stopped updating it on a yearly basis, these guides are not worth it any more (unless you get one that's just published). It's well organized and better than nothing (therefore getting an extra star)... Try a different guide that has been recently published.
