1 comments about Lonely Planet North Africa.
- This 700-page guidebook dates back to 1995, covering Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya. As a result, it is inevitably out-of-date: much has changed in the countries of North Africa, in their situation and in facilities for the traveler, especially in Libya and Algeria. Some sections on how to get around etc. are surely out-of-date. Yet, this book remains a truly essential tool for anyone traveling to, or simply interested in, North Africa. The sections on culture and society are tremendously useful and extremely well-written, including a beautiful coloured-photographs section on Moroccan Arts & Crafts. In terms of travel, this remains the only Lonely Planet guidebook covering Algeria (with over 90 pages on the country !), and is recommendable for anyone wishing to travel to that country. For the collector of guidebooks, this is a masterpiece, densely filled with information, and superbly researched and written. For the practical-minded traveler simply going to Morocco, Tunisia or Libya, however, LP guidebooks exist for those three individual countries, and may be a better - if heavier - choice. Nevertheless, it should be stressed: this books remains a great achievement, in Lonely Planet's great successes in covering the world.

1 comments about Another Africa: Photographs by Robert Lyons; Text by Chinua Achebe.
- This book by Achebe and Lyons is infact a decent and respectful view of Africa. It does not contain pictures of Starving children or wars. The photographs taken by Lyon shows ordinary Africans going about their business with dignity. There is also a very good essay by Achebe discussing the Images of Africa over time.It uses as it's main theme a discussion of Joseph Conrad's book the heart of darkness. He does not shy away from issues such as slave trade and wars, but he treats the subject of Africa's image with dignity. There are also a number of poems after a few pictures. The pictures are about 100. My only grouse with the book is that no pictures were taken of Nigeria and South Africa which are indeed countries that show all the contradictions and hopes of Africa.I say this mainly for sentimental reasons being a Nigerian i would have loved a picture of the hustle and bustle of Ojuelegba in Lagos or the Onitsha market. It is however a welcome addition to my library.

1 comments about Travels With Fortune: An African Adventure.
- Anyone who has ever visited the continent of Africa must read this book. It is simply one of the most unbelievable stories ever written. Travels With Fortune describes Cristina Dodwell's three year journey across the continent of Africa in 1975. But this book is much more than a simple travelogue; it is the recounting of a truly epic adventure. Cristina begins her journey in England with a Land Rover and three fellow travelers. A few weeks later she finds herself in Nigeria, stranded because two of her companions sold her car without her approval or knowledge. And the adventure begins. Unwilling to cut her trip short, Christina and her female companion embark on one of the most remarkable expeditions through Africa ever undertaken. Travels With Fortune is written in a blunt tone with a minimum of exaggeration or elaboration. Dodwell avoids the overabundance of adjectives that litter many travelogues, choosing instead to simply recount events as they transpire. The result is a tale so outlandish that the reader is often left staring at the page with mouth agape, shaking their head in disbelief. Only it is obvious from the text that Dodwell is bluntly accurate in her portrayal of the events. Unfortunately, the book was published in England in 1979 and is out of print. If you run across a copy snap it up, read it, then pass it along to friends. It is a book that revels in the spirit of adventure and is an absolute delight to read.

1 comments about South Africa Travel Atlas (Globetrotter Travel Atlas).
- I ordered this atlas hoping for an atlas of South Africa of the quality of the Rand MacNally Atlases put out for the US, and was very disappointed in this one. It is barely more than useless, with maps with inadequate detail, and no good map of the whole country for planning purposes. We are currently in South Africa and have had to get other maps. There are better atlases (we had one five years ago, but cannot find it this year on the internet).
