We checked into our hotel last night. I had booked the room through Priceline, and thought I got a good price. $60/night plus fees and taxes. I had compared it to Hotels.com and Orbitz. The room price was the same, but the fees were lower with priceline. Apparently how it works is that I paid Priceline, and then when I check in, the hotel gets a credit card number from Priceline, and then they charge the room to Priceline. But I noticed that the price being charged to Priceline was significantly less than the $60/a night. About $10 a night less! Ouch! The guy told me quietly that next time I could save money over booking with Priceline, by booking directly with the hotel. Wow! I wish I would have known that!
So next time I go to book a room, I will go onto Orbitz, Hotels.com, or Priceline, and find the best hotel for the price, then I will try calling the hotel directly and booking the room!
And since the I am only going to be staying at this hotel for three of the four nights I booked through Priceline, and the fact that Priceline won’t let me cancel the fourth night, my stay here even became more expensive. I bet if I had booked through the hotel, and then needed to cancel a single night, I would have had no problem.
So if you want to beat Priceline, look up the hotel you want on Priceline, then call the hotel directly and book. The worst that could happen is that the hotel tells you a higher price. Then you can always go back to Priceline/Orbitz/Hotels.com.
